How Arnel Pineda Had To Be Forced Onto Stage For His First Journey Show

In 2007, Filipino rock singer Arnel Pineda was playing clubs in major cities in the Philippines with his band called The Zoo. Some of the songs they played were covers of the classic rock band Journey. Little did he know that one of the people viewing the videos of their shows that their super fan Noel Gomez posted to YouTube was none other than original Journey guitarist Neal Schon. According to Pineda's biography on his official website, when Schon emailed Gomez saying he was interested in speaking with Pineda, the singer didn't believe it. "Bud, ignore that," he told Gomez. "I have been in the music industry long enough; getting similar offers that turn out to be bogus or nothing."

How Much Arnel Pineda Is Really Worth

From a young age, Arnel Pineda knew that whatever he did with his life, he would do it singing. According to his biography on his official website, the Filipino rock singer knew as a teenager that his voice was his "key to survival," and he joined his first band, Yjoz, in 1982, when he was just 15 years old. Since then, he has come a long way from his early life on the streets, selling scrap metal to eke out a living. Four years after forming Yjoz, the band — renamed AMO — was champion of the Philippines' Rock Wars contest, and two years after that, he was awarded Best Singer at the Yamaha World Band Explosion.

ARNEL PINEDA Says Working With New JOURNEY Members Has Been 'Amazing'

Frontman Arnel Pineda has told Rolling Stone in a new interview that the band has completed six tracks for its upcoming album, with "maybe seven songs to go." Asked if these cuts are ballads or rockers, he said: "For now, we're doing the rocker songs first, not the ballads. I think the seven songs they're working on, they're working on something huge, like how you've known JOURNEY doing ballads. It's between [1981's] 'Mother, Father' and [1978's] 'Winds Of March'. We're working on that song. We'll see what happens. I'm waiting for them to send me the demos so that we can record it next week."
