Anthony Pettis thought he’d seen it all. As a former UFC champion with more than 30 fights on his record, Pettis was excited for a change when he signed with the PFL. But losses in his first two fights of the 2021 season bounced him from the playoffs for the title and the $1 million prize.

Earlier tonight (Fri., June 24, 2022), Stevie Ray scored perhaps the biggest victory of his professional career when he tapped out Anthony Pettis. The fight began competitively, with Ray pressing through Pettis’ array of kicking offense. The two wrestled along the fence a good bit in the first, but it remained largely a stand up contest that saw both men land some clean blows.

Lightweights and light heavyweights will compete at the first of three Professional Fighters League playoff events, with tickets available for the fights at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden beginning at noon Friday. Lightweight semifinalists Anthony Pettis, Alexander Martinez and Olivier Aubin-Mercier already have qualified for the Friday, Aug. 5 playoff event along with light heavyweights Antonio Carlos Junior — the 2021 champion at 205 pounds — Rob Wilkinson, Omari Akhmedov and Delan Monte. The final slot in the 155-pound semis will go to 2021 season winner Raush Manfio, unless Stevie Ray can finish Pettis by 2:41 of the third round when the two face each other Friday night in Atlanta. The winners from each weight class’ semifinal bouts will meet in the fall as the PFL championship event, with division winners securing a $1 million prize. Ticket prices at the Hulu Theater range from $49 to $750.

In the final lightweight bout of the 2022 PFL season, Anthony Pettis took on Stevie Ray. Both fighters took the center of the octagon after a touch of the gloves. Pettis opened the fight up with an axe kick. Flying knee from Pettis nearly connects. Pettis threw a step-in knee followed by a right hand. Ray misses with a left hand. A spinning heel kick connected to Ray’s body, and then Ray shot for a takedown which Pettis defended. Pettis reversed Ray and put him against the fence. 2:16 left in the round, and Ray shot for a takedown but missed. Ray landed a left hand that made Pettis lose his balance. Another 1-2 from Ray, and then he put Pettis against the fence. 37 seconds left, and Pettis tried for a clever trip, but Ray defended. Pettis threw a tornado kick to end the round.

PFL lightweight Anthony Pettis has no plans of slowing down anytime soon. ‘Showtime’ is set to return at PFL 5 this Friday against UFC-veteran Stevie Ray. The return will be his first fight since his submission victory against Myles Price at PFL 3 last month. If Pettis scores a win over Ray, he will book himself a spot in the PFL playoffs.
