When classic TV icon Alan Alda was a young boy, he survived the life-threatening and often debilitating viral infection Polio. Alda came down with the illness in 1943, almost a decade before the U.S. suffered its worst Polio pandemic that killed 3,000 people and left 21,000 more with partial or full paralysis.
Back in 2015, M*A*S*H star Alan Alda read an article about Parkinson’s disease in the New York Times. The classic TV icon saw that one of the earliest symptoms patients report was acting out their dreams while they slept. To his dismay, Alda recalled throwing a pillow at his wife just a few days earlier while he dreamt he was throwing a sack of potatoes at an attacker.
Throughout his nearly 90 years of life, Alan Alda has seen his fair share of ups and downs. In addition to becoming an icon of classic TV with his role as Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce on M*A*S*H, Alan Alda is also a Korean War veteran, a Polio survivor, and is currently battling Parkinson’s disease.

M*A*S*H star Alan Alda just brought up the cost of Hawkeye and Houlihan’s iconic Finale Kiss in comparison to the cost of Super Bowl commercials. Super Bowl ads are continuing to hire bigger and bigger talent to join in. Will Smith, Seth Rogen, Shania Twain, Paul Rudd, Dolly Parton, and even Arnold Schwarzenegger are appearing in ads for the Super Bowl. Each year, they seem to get more and more elaborate and extravagant. And yeah, the price for an ad really has skyrocketed since the 1983 M*A*S*H finale.
Sure, playing a soldier on M*A*S*H did call for Alan Alda to use his talents. Yet he also was able to use his military experience as well.
