‘You get a great adrenaline rush’: Bloomfield’s Tatum Olson shows passion for reined cow horse

Of all the events taking place at this week’s National High School Finals Rodeo, reined cow horse doesn’t immediately come to mind as a signature rodeo event. After all, it has less to do with speed, strength or endurance than other events. Instead, reined cow horse is more like synchronized swimming, or ice skating, in the sense that contestants perform a series of ordered moves and are then scored on the timing and precision of their movements.

Indians wrap up state run

FORT DODGE — An Oskaloosa vs Carlisle matchup at state usually would be a prime matchup. But with both teams coming off of hard fought losses and having to play each other in a consolation game for fifth place late Wednesday morning with the roars of the semifinals in the big grandstands just close enough, it wasn’t a big surprise that both teams didn’t have that jump that’d you expect in a state game as No. 8 Oskaloosa fell to No. 4 Carlisle, 4-0. “It's really hard right now to play this game,” Oskaloosa head coach Jay Harms said. “We went through this in 2019 but I told the kids we didn't finish like we wanted to but we finished where we wanted to. There are a lot of teams that wish they could be here finishing today at Fort Dodge.”
