New York Mills man dies after being hit by train

A New York Mills man died early Wednesday, June 16, when he was hit by a train near Highway 10 and Highway 106, just north of New York Mills. Ronald Tonuci, 29, was living in a camper in a field north of 56303 Highway 10, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities warn of Amazon scam

OTTER TAIL COUNTY, MINN. (Valley News Live) - Authorities in Otter Tail County are warning people about a recent scam going around involving their Amazon accounts. The Sheriff’s Office says people are getting a call from someone claiming to be an Amazon representative, saying their items are being placed on hold because of suspicious spending. The caller is then said to ask for your credit card or banking information to offer a ‘refund.’

(Otter Tail County, MN) -- Some cause for concern after officials in Otter Tail County say a scam is circulating involving residents Amazon accounts. The Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office confirms to WDAY Radio that folks are getting a call from someone claiming to represent the ecommerce giant, saying their purchases are being placed on hold due to suspicious activity on their accounts. The scammer then asks for your credit card or banking info, claiming to be giving you a refund on your purchase.

The Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener has been a tradition since 1948, designed to improve Minnesota’s economy through the promotion of the state’s recreational opportunities, especially fishing. After applying and being selected to host the event in 2019, Otter Tail County successfully held the event May 15. After the many challenges presented by the global pandemic, Gov. Tim Walz recognized their efforts with two awards.

Amazon Delivery Scam Hits Lakes Area

DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – A scam involving Amazon has hit the Lakes Area. The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office says someone is calling Lakes Area residents claiming to be from Amazon notifying people of suspicious spending on their Amazon account and items being placed on hold. The caller, then phishes for credit card numbers and bank account information to offer a “refund.”

Aggressive dog reported in Ottertail

An Ottertail resident contacted the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office on Monday regarding an aggressive dog. The resident reported that a loose dog had chased and lunged at the resident. The resident further stated to a responding deputy that they were letting a friend’s dog out next door when another dog came from the back of the house barking, growling and snapping. The person ran inside and stated that although the dog did not bite them it wasn’t on a leash. When a deputy spoke to the owner of the dog they stated there was an electric fence to control the animal. The deputy advised the owner to keep the dog on a leash and to make sure the fence is working properly.

Tractor vandalized near Devils Lake in rural Perham

A tractor on a farm just east of Devils Lake in rural Perham was reportedly vandalized. The complainant reported the incident to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday at approximately 3:48 p.m. Corn stubble and turkey feathers were stuffed into the engine of a John Deere 4630 tractor parked in a field near the intersection of 410th Avenue and 460th Street. The complainant said the engine now needs to be repaired. The incident is believed to have occurred between June 5-10. The complainant was asked by their insurance provider to make a report with the sheriff’s office. The estimated repair cost of the engine is $6,000-$10,000.

Wagon stolen from driveway

A wagon was reported stolen on Monday from a driveway on the north shore of Pelican Lake. The resident told the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office the wagon was taken from the end of the driveway after it was used to pull garbage cans to the end of the drive. The complainant’s daughter eventually found the wagon at a neighbor’s home. The neighbor told them they thought the complainant was discarding the item with the trash. The wagon was returned and the complainant requested no further action.

Railroad fire quickly extinguished

On the morning of Tuesday, June 15 the Wadena Fire Department went to a small fire on the BNSF Railway right of away in Compton Township in Otter Tail County. Upon arrival, fire units observed a small fire burning in the middle of the railroad tracks. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire, according to a fire department news release. There was no apparent damage to the railroad tracks.
