A homicide trial is set to be rescheduled for December after Colorado’s 16th Judicial Court was unable to field a jury in La Junta last week. “It is with great displeasure that the 16th Judicial District proceeds with this process, but if the citizens of the counties that make up the district wish to continue enjoying their system of justice, they must be willing to sacrifice for it in the way of jury service when called upon,” Chief Judge Mark MacDonnell said.

Domino's Pizza provides La Junta and Arkansas Valley with new food and job opportunities

La Junta’s latest chain restaurant, Domino’s Pizza, has made a splash in the Arkansas Valley as it continues to bring jobs and commerce to the area. Currently, Domino’s in La Junta has 23 employees, but is looking to reach 50, Regional Director Scott Gates said. Current employees include sales representatives, delivery drivers, cooks and management positions. The increase in employment is something La Junta Mayor Jeffri Pruyn said will be significant for the city.

Otero Junior College receives Open Educational Resources grant to help close economic gaps

Otero Junior College was granted a $30,000 Open Education Resources (OER) Grant earlier in May. The grant is funded by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education (CCHE). The grant is teaching and learning materials that can be used free of cost. The resources are often created by individuals or companies that choose not to copyright their productions in order to prevent inaccessibility because of cost. OER's offer opportunities for changes in instruction and allows instructors to design their own curriculum and content. Educators will be able to network their strengths and improve the quality of education for their students be sharing these teaching tools and strategies.

22-year-old’s death being investigated as a possible homicide near Rocky Ford

ROCKY FORD, Colo. (KKTV) - Authorities in a small Colorado community are investigating the death of a 22-year-old as a possible homicide. The Otero County Sheriff’s Office is reporting they responded to a shooting on Monday in the 29000 block of County Road 20 just outside of Rocky Ford. The community is about 50 miles east of Pueblo. When deputies arrived at the scene they found Joseph Barela. He had been shot in the head.

The Otero County Sheriff's Office is investigating a possible homicide after the death of a young man from Rocky Ford. After responding to reports of shots fired outside Rocky Ford city limits in the 29000 block of Otero County Road on Monday, Otero County sheriff deputies reported finding 22-year-old Joseph Barela with a gunshot wound to his head upon arrival to the scene, according to a news release from the Otero County Sheriff's Office.

No tuition increase for Otero Junior College in 2021-22

There will be no increase in tuition at Otero Junior College for the 2021-22 academic year. The State Board for Community Colleges and Occupational Education (SBCCOE) voted in mid-April to set tuition rates for the Colorado Community College System (CCCS). The outcome was to keep tuition flat, meaning that there will be no increase in tuition costs for students.

Fowler board of education approves 4 post lift for bus garage

The Fowler School District R4J hosted its Board of Education meeting on May 17 at the district headquarters.
