72-year-old Vermont man dies in apparent drowning, police say

NEWBURY, Vt. — State police are investigating the death of a man found in an Orange County lake. Members of Vermont State Police said 72-year-old James Peabody, of Bradford, went into Halls Lake for a swim early Sunday afternoon. Police said bystanders later saw Peabody unresponsive in the water and brought him to shore, attempted life-saving measures and called authorities.

Vermont State Police Detective Resigns Amid Domestic Abuse Charge

BRADFORD — A suspended Vermont State Police detective from Bradford, who has pleaded not guilty to a charge of domestic abuse for attacking his fiancée over five months, has quit his job. Nicholas J. Cianci, 25, of Fairgrounds Road, submitted his resignation effective May 27, Major Kevin Lane confirmed Wednesday.
