The end of the Norman County West School District represents the end of an era for Hendrum, whose school began in 1880, as well as Halstad, which paired with it in 1983, and partners Perley, Georgetown and Shelly. Sheriff Jeremy Thornton identifies the victim as 66-year-old Robert Torkelson, who lived in the house. Thornton says it appears smoking was the cause of the blaze.
