Riverview's newest dairy, Waukon Dairy, is milking 10,500 cows per day and using local feeds

GARY, Minnesota — Waukon Dairy, a subsidiary of Riverview LLP, since June has been milking 10,500 cows daily in rural Norman County, Minnesota. The dairy, which is located on 160 acres in Waukon Township, eight miles southeast of Gary, Minnesota, began milking June 20, 2022, 15 months after construction began on the facility. Riverview LLP construction manager Lyle Grimm declined to estimate the cost of the dairy construction.

FireFrost ATV Club Fuels Momentum with Recent Grant Awards. Halstad, MN — The grants continue to fuel momentum for western Norman County’s FireFrost ATV Club and their quest to develop a multi-use trail from Nielsville to Perley, MN. The club earlier this summer received grants from Polaris and Yamaha that brought in $25,000, but just recently were able to secure annual assistance from the Minnesota DNR, plus a grant from the Federal Recreation Trail Program, which will provide the club with $150,000 in funding, according to club member Lucas Spaeth.

Ada, MN — During a recent visit on the KRJB Kaleidoscope Program, Garry Johanson with Norman County Planning and Zoning shared some recent trends in building permits and new construction throughout the county in past couple of years. It may not be as noticeable because they are spread out throughout the rural regions, but Johanson noted that there have been a lot of building permits in the past two years for new houses, shops, and the combination of the two, shouses, on large multiacre lots.

Bagley, MN — During this week’s Clearwater County Fair, local alumni will get together to introduce their latest couple into this year’s Red River Valley Emerging Leadership Program. Clearwater County ELP Liaison Stacy Peterson joined the KKCQ Food for Thought Program this week to share more information about the Emerging Leadership Program and its history. Peterson says the program began decades ago as the King Agassiz Program focused on agricultural leaders, but slowly evolved into the Red River Valley Emerging Leadership Program to include all our rural leaders.

Twin Valley, MN — The Norman County East School Board held their regular monthly meeting last Monday, July 18th. As it was the first meeting of the new school year, the board took care of much of the usual action, such as milk and fuel bids, set district fees, and the long-term facilities maintenance plan, according to Norman County East Superintendent Rob Nudell.

Ada, MN — A couple of upcoming 4-H events for area youth. On Tuesday, August 9th, those who completed 6th grade and up can come learning all there is to know about the Basic to Livestock Marketing. Participants will learn the importance of livestock marketing, catalog development, livestock photography, advertising, and animal management. The session will be led a fellow 4-H leader, according to Norman County 4-H Extension Officer Linda Houglum.

Norman County Salvation Army Taking Donations for Backpack Drive

Ada, MN — The Norman County Salvation Army is currently accepting donations of new backpacks for their annual Backpack Drive, as well as taking applications for youth in need of new backpacks and school supplies ahead of the school year. Aimee Eggen with the Norman County Salvation Army says they already have all the school supplies they need, but they do need donations of new backpacks, specifically ones that your child would be excited to wear to school.

Halstad City Council Terminates Policing Contract with Norman County Sheriff’s Office

Halstad, MN — The Halstad City Council has decided to do away with their policing contract with the Norman County Sheriff’s Office. The council informed Sheriff Jeremy Thornton of their decision at their regular monthly meeting on Monday night. The city pays $30,000 a year for forty hours of additional patrolling each month. Halstad Mayor Darin Johnson says the council felt that the price wasn’t worth the service they were getting.
