NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – A man has died following this afternoon's shooting on S. Cape Henry Avenue. On July 5, 2022, around 12:30 p.m. police were called to the 3000 block of S. Cape Henry Avenue for the report of a gunshot disturbance. When the officers arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

Since 2020, NPD has experienced a significant shortage of patrol officers. While the department works to recruit, officers currently assigned to specialty units and administrative services will be detailed to patrol districts throughout the city.

Mosquito Samples Test Positive for West Nile Virus in Norfolk

(NORFOLK, Va.) – The Norfolk Department of Public Health has detected the first West Nile Virus (WNV) activity of the season in the City of Norfolk. Two mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus. Both samples were collected in the Colonial Place neighborhood on June 30, 2022. The Division of Vector Control is conducting mosquito control operations in this neighborhood, including treatments of storm drains, and standing water, fogging operations, and continued surveillance activities.

On June 29, 2022, around 12:40 a.m., police were dispatched to the 6200 block of Alexander Street for the report of a gunshot victim. When officers arrived, they found two men who were both suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Norfolk Police need help identifying commercial burglary suspect

NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) - Detectives are asking for the public’s assistance to identify the suspect who broke into two businesses. Around 3:30 a.m., on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, Officers responded to Wards Corner for the reports of a commercial burglary at the Boost Mobile store located at 7655 Granby Street and the ABC store located at 7550 Granby St. When police arrived, they found that the stores had been broken into, and items had been stolen.

Norfolk Police need help identifying man involved in fatal hit & run

NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – Norfolk police are asking for the public’s assistance with identifying a man involved in a fatal hit and run Friday evening. On June 24th, around 8:23 p.m., Norfolk Police responded to the 2400 block of Tidewater Drive for a report of a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian. When first responders arrived on-scene, they found 36-year-old Karl H. Wilkerson suffering from serious injuries. Wilkerson was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Norfolk Police identify man killed on Monroe Place

NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – Virginia State Police are continuing to investigate the officer involved shooting that happened early Tuesday morning in Larchmont. On June 21, 2022, around 5:15 a.m., officers arrived at the 5500 block on Monroe Place to arrest 41-year-old Antonio J. Beekman who was wanted out of the City of Virginia Beach for malicious wounding, use of a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Upon locating Beekman, officers assigned to the Special Operations Team, identified themselves as police officers. After identifying themselves, Beekman began to shoot at the officers. Four Officers returned fire, and Beekman sustained life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. No officers were injured during the incident.
