Newport Folk Fest Artists Visit Boys & Girls Club of Newport County

Campers at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County’s Camp Grosvenor got a sneak peek at the caliber of performances at this year’s Newport Folk Festival when The Ballroom Thieves visited the kids at the Saunderstown camp to perform, share instruments and interact with them. Since 2013, the Newport Festivals Foundation, organizers of the iconic Newport Folk Festival and Newport Jazz Festival, has collaborated with the Club to bring enriching, live performances to Club members to expose them to vocal and instrumental music, and has funded music instruction at the Clubhouse.

Youth Choir and Free Piano Lessons

Ten Newport County students entering third and fourth grade will be chosen to receive free piano lessons. The program is offered through the Choir School of Newport County to students who qualify for free or reduced priced lunch. Lessons will be at St. John’s Church on Mondays. Children will also be enrolled in the choir school’s Chorister program, which rehearses once a week. All materials are provided, and participants will be loaned an 88 weighted-key Yamaha piano for home practice. CD players, transportation and snacks will be provided if needed. Applications are due Aug. 5, and early enrollment is encouraged.
