COVID cases ticking up in Newport County, following the state trend

Following the state trend, COVID cases are ticking up in Newport County. Over the course of seven days, from July 15-21, there were 37 cases of the virus reported in the six communities that make up the county for a daily average of 5.3 per day, according to the latest data provided by the state Department of Health.

Newport Folk Fest Artists Visit Boys & Girls Club of Newport County

Campers at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County’s Camp Grosvenor got a sneak peek at the caliber of performances at this year’s Newport Folk Festival when The Ballroom Thieves visited the kids at the Saunderstown camp to perform, share instruments and interact with them. Since 2013, the Newport Festivals Foundation, organizers of the iconic Newport Folk Festival and Newport Jazz Festival, has collaborated with the Club to bring enriching, live performances to Club members to expose them to vocal and instrumental music, and has funded music instruction at the Clubhouse.

YMCA Breaks Ground on Renovation

Dozens were on hand for a July 14 groundbreaking ceremony to kick off the $15 million expansion and renovation of the Newport County YMCA in Middletown. YMCA leaders, volunteers, and board members have spent the past two years raising funds to modernize the aging facility, which was constructed in 1974 when the YMCA was relocated from its first home in Newport. The YMCA purchased the eight acres of land it occupies for $1.2 million from the John Clarke Trust in 2018.

Trudy Coxe is the CEO and executive director of The Preservation Society of Newport County. The society recently unveiled the restoration of a historical footpath on the grounds of The Breakers. The 1,500-foot serpentine path originally joined The Breakers to two adjoining properties and featured a connection to the sea. The portion on the Breakers property has now been replanted and restored.

DiPalma Pushes for Suicide Barriers

In the past 12 years, 28 people have committed suicide by jumping off a Newport County bridge, including four in the past two years at the Pell Bridge. It’s what prompted Sen. Lou DiPalma, who represents Newport, Middletown, Little Compton, and Tiverton, to introduce a bill earlier this year that would direct the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, in conjunction with the state’s turnpike and bridge authority, to erect safety barriers on the Mount Hope Bridge, the Pell Bridge and the Jamestown-Verrazzano Bridge by Jan. 1, 2023.
