Craven County construction worker picks up big payday in Vanceboro

A Craven County construction worker tried his hand at a lottery ticket and was able to pull off the biggest payday of his life. After working all day in the sun, Kirk Nyberg Jr. of New Bern stopped by the gas station for cigarettes. Nyberg decided to add a $5 scratch-off to his total and eventually walked away with a $250,000 prize.

Reporting on residents in harm’s way

I didn’t know what to expect as I drove the two-lane road from Greenville to New Bern after I landed from South Florida one early morning in March. I was there as a reporter to find stories about climate change relocation as part of a year-long project, Harm’s Way, produced by Columbia Journalism Investigations in partnership with the Center for Public Integrity and Type Investigations. The focus: increasing numbers of communities across the country are so threatened by climate change that the best option is relocating, but federal programs aren’t up to the massive task.

Craven County airport will spread its wings with expanded northeast air service

Local residents flying out of Coastal Carolina Regional Airport should soon have more flight options available for travel to and from the northeast. The airport announced last week that it has been awarded a grant that will be used to expand its air service. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Small Community Air Service Development Program grant makes $776,000 available to EWN. Matching contributions from state and local sources bring the total funding available to $1.4 million.

Schedules to change at driver’s license offices

Pack routs ‘Canes in season opener
