New Bedford Police Make 10 Arrests at Portuguese Feast

NEW BEDFORD — Police in New Bedford arrested 10 people during the four-day Feast of the Blessed Sacrament this past week, according to police spokesman Lt. Scott Carola. They were taken into custody for a variety of offenses including disorderly conduct, assault and battery on a police officer, and resisting arrest, Carola noted.

No Injuries in Fishing Boat Collision Off Aquinnah

None were injured in a two-boat collision near Aquinnah Friday, Coast Guard Menemsha boatswain’s mate Justus Christopher confirmed Monday. Mr. Christopher said the charter fishing boat Tomahawk, captained by Buddy Vanderhoop, struck the Gloria Jean, another fishing vessel, around 12:30 p.m. Friday. The collision caused damage to the starboard bow of both vessels, Mr. Christopher said.

Various areas of Rhode Island have their own music festival happening during the summer. Providence has PVDFest, Pawtucket has Culture Shock, the southeastern corner has the Rhythm & Roots Festival in Charlestown and the southwestern part has the Washington County Fair in Richmond. In the northwest region of The Ocean State, there’s FloodFest that takes place at Little Rhody Vasa Park in Foster. This particular festival is making its return to the park on August 13 with local acts Jabbawaukee, Northeast Traffic, RumbleKats, Rat Ruckus, Tai Chi Funk Squad and James & The Giants performing starting at 1pm. Another band who’ll be taking part in the festivities are country rockers Nick Bosse & Northern Roots.

The 106th Feast of the Blessed Sacrament in New Bedford would not be as successful as it was if it wasn't for the hard work and dedication of the committee and volunteers. When you have any type of outdoor event here on the SouthCoast in the dog days of August, it's going to be hot. There's no doubt about that, but this year felt a little more stifling. Regardless, it didn't stop the crowd of thousands upon thousands from getting their Feast on.

Portuguese Man o' War Sightings Prompt Beach Closings In Massachusetts

Several Massachusetts beaches have been closed in recent days due to sightings of Portuguese men-of-war, venomous marine animals closely related to jellyfish. Harding's Beach in Chatham was closed Sunday and part of Monday due to the animals. The town of Yarmouth closed all south side beaches on Monday for the same reason, warning that a sting from a man-of-war is "excruciatingly painful."
