Clark takes tight GOP commission race, special school levy passes narrowly

Editor’s note: This story was update on May 11 to include district-wide preliminary vote totals in some races. Morgan County Commissioner Bill Clark is the apparent winner of a Republican primary race for the Morgan County Commission. Clark, who served more than a year as an appointed commissioner, beat out political newcomer Gary “G.W.” Easton in a close race. Preliminary election totals reported by the Morgan County Clerk on May 10 show Clark with 1,195 votes and Easton with 1,038 votes. Easton had the lead in four of 13 precincts, but Clark rolled up the remainder of the outlying precincts to secure his nomination. Clark will be unopposed in the November general election.

Vote for Up to Three in Morgan County School Board Race

A mistake on the initial ballot published within the last couple of weeks has confused some voters about the Morgan County School Board race. The initial ballot, published in the Morgan Messenger on April 20, 2022, directed voters to vote for “not more than two” candidates, when in fact this year there are three openings and voters can vote for three candidates, not two.

Police believe remains are those of man missing since 2018

A West Virginia medical examiner joined officers with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department this morning at the site where human remains were located yesterday by mushroom hunters. Those remains have been removed from an isolated spot along a small creek where they were found sitting against a rock. Skeletal remains were largely contained by clothing and included a jaw and skull, which the medical examiner will use to positively identify the person. Also recovered at the scene was a handgun and a bullet.

Litten, Spade & O’Brien are Golden Horseshoe winners

Warm Springs Middle School eighth graders Landon Litten, Camden Spade, and Adam O’Brien are the three 2022 Morgan County winners of the Golden Horseshoe Award. The prestigious Golden Horseshoe award recognizes state students that excel in West Virginia history and culture and is given to the top-scoring eighth grade students on the Golden Horseshoe exam in each of the state’s 55 counties. The award is considered one of the greatest honors a West Virginia student can achieve.

Summer program options taking shape for local youth

Morgan County Schools summer programs return this year with a variety of remediation and enrichment activities and fun for kindergarten through twelfth grade students. Summer programs include Camp MoCo at Warm Springs Intermediate School, Camp Alpha at Warm Springs Middle School and credit recovery at Berkeley Springs High School and Paw Paw High School. Morgan County voter rolls shrunk since 2020, says state report

As West Virginia’s primary election takes place on Tuesday, May 10, fewer Morgan County residents will be seeking out a ballot.
