Dogie Days celebration returns to Dumas

Dogie Days returned live and in person this week offering everything Moore County residents and visitors alike have come to love: curly fries, hamburgers and other carnival foods, a community barbecue, rides, games, a parade, fellowship, and the drawing for a new vehicle, among other things. "I think there is a lot of excitement this year," said Lion Milton Pax, Dogie Days Old Timer for 2021. "People have been cooped up and with it being cancelled last year, I think people are really looking forward to it."

Health Foundation raises record amount for nursing education in Moore County

The Moore County Health Foundation more than doubled its previous fundraising record of $14,000 Wednesday, May 26, from the organization's annual Nursing Scholarship Luncheon. According to MCHF Executive Director Kathie Fuston, the more than 200 guests and other donors contributed nearly $35,000 towards nursing scholarships for Moore County residents studying to become either registered or licensed vocational nurses in the programs of Amarillo College and Frank Phillips College. "I am overwhelmed by the generosity of our community," said Fuston. Since 2017, the foundation has awarded 144 semester scholarships.

JBS USA latest victim of cyber attack; operations affected at Cactus

JBS USA was the victim of a cyber attack over the weekend by unknown persons that has affected operations at the JBS Cactus plant. According to Moore County Judge Rowdy Rhoades, who has been in contact with local JBS officials, only shipping and maintenance operations would be performed on Tuesday. It is not known when meat processing operations will return to normal. Rhoades said he was assured that JBS would still be able to supply the beef for the upcoming Dogie Days barbecue set to take place Thursday, June 10.

Former police chief honored for sacrifice

Former Dumas Police Department Chief Marvin Trejo, who died on May 10, 2020 from complications due to COVID, was recently awarded a posthumous Medal of Honor from the American Police Hall of Fame, according to current Chief Ray Resendez. Resendez spoke to the Dumas City Commission during their regular meeting Tuesday. "I thought that was kind of a neat deal," he said as Trejo's wife, Lisa, looked on. "They sent us this plaque, and we will hang it proudly in our police department. We are really proud and honored to receive this on behalf of Chief Trejo."
