County may finalize its budget soon

Montague County Commissioners will meet at 9 a.m. on Aug. 8 to consider a proposed tax rate and possibly wrap up its budget in a workshop. At the Aug. 8 meeting the court approved a draft budget and posted it on the county website for public review, however, the budget still had several items that were unknown including several large expenditures using the COVID relief funds. That topic also is on Monday’s agenda.

School bells ready to ring as August opens

The summer has flown by and in just a few weeks all Montague County students will be back in the classroom waving goodbye to their summer fun. In the old days school used to start right after Labor Day, but as the state changed the way time in school is calculated going from days to minutes all schools follow a different schedule. Most in the county will go back within the first two weeks of August.

Fire dangers continue to rise

On July 25 the Saint Jo, Forestburg and Sunset Texas Fire Department responded to a vehicle/grass fire on FM 1655 near Forestburg. Crews arrived on the scene to find a pickup truck hauling hay with heavy fire conditions, which resulted in a several-acre grass fire. Crews worked quickly to contain the grass fire and save the truck.

Denton County Jail to transfer inmates to Montague due to staff shortage

With nearly 200 detention staff positions vacant, Denton County Jail officials plan to send inmates out of county to alleviate the jail’s growing inmate population. The Denton County Sheriff’s Office plans to send some inmates to the Montague County Jail, about 50 miles to the northeast. The cost of housing in Montague will be $55 per day per inmate, according to a budget amendment request form.

Commissioners may fill veteran’s service position

Montague County Commissioners will consider filling the vacancy in the veteran’s service officer position when they meet at 9 a.m. on July 25. The VSO has been vacant since July 7 the last day for longtime county employee Colm Murphy who submitted a letter of resignation on Jun 24. Murphy had served as VSO for the past 10 years.
