17-year-old charged in murder of Conyers man

COVINGTON — A 17-year-old male is being held on murder and other charges at the Newton County Detention Center following a Sept. 14 shooting that left another man dead. According to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, Jayden Elijah Cuvilje, 17, of a Fieldview Lane, Covington address, faces charges of felony murder, possession of marijuana less than 1 ounce, possession of pistol or revolver by person under 18, aggravated assault, and possession of firearm or knife during commission of crime.

Winder man sentenced for shooting into occupied Gainesville motel room

A Winder man who shot into a motel room with four people inside of it in 2018 was sentenced to two years in prison on Tuesday, Sept. 21, according to court documents. Jose Manuel Maldonado, 25, was given a 20-year sentence with the first two of those years behind bars after a negotiated plea. He was given credit for time served since August 2020, and the rest of the sentence may be served on probation.

Gas station clerks charged with selling alcohol to minors

Three clerks at two gas stations in Jefferson have been arrested for selling alcohol to minors. According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, multiple complaints were made that employees of the Mobile Gas Station on Athens Street and Fast Phil’s on Hwy 129 were selling alcohol, tobacco, and vape pens to minors.

Athens high schools to see increased security after extended lockdown on Wednesday

Clarke County high schools will have increased security following an increase in fights and a lockdown at Cedar Shoals High School. Superintendent Xernona J. Thomas sent a letter to parents Wednesday afternoon announcing that security will increase at Cedar Shoals and Clarke Central high schools.
