Local Girl Scouts raising funds to help light up the fairgrounds

WOODSFIELD — Two Black Diamond Girl Scouts are working to raise funds to complete a community service project that will help them obtain their Silver Award. Allie Isaly and Leah Hutchinson, both 14, along with Hutchinson’s mother Misty Yontz, met with the Monroe County Board of Commissioners on Monday afternoon to talk about their community service project and what they are doing to complete it. Isaly said they are collecting donations to purchase and install a series of LED lights around the horse arena at the Monroe County Fairgrounds in Woodsfield. Both girls are active in 4-H as well as Scouts and show horses at the fairgrounds.

Monroe County purchases Safe Auto building

WOODSFIELD — Monroe County officials hope to transform a recently purchased building into a community center. During a special meeting in late May, Monroe County Commissioners Mick Schumacher, Diane Burkhart and Bill Bolon finalized the purchase of the former Safe Auto Insurance Co. building located on Black Walnut Parkway in Woodsfield. The building was listed at $600,000; however, commissioners were able to purchase it for $300,000.

Monroe considering youth clinic

WOODSFIELD — The Monroe County Health Department is working to gauge interest before planning a COVID-19 vaccine clinic for the area’s youth. Kara Dixon, director of nursing, said now that the Pfizer vaccine has been approved for children as young as 12 years old, the staff is trying to gauge interest and determine how many youngsters would like to get the shot. Currently the department only has Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines, so it will have to order Pfizer to accommodate the county’s youth.

Monroe County Senior Center reopens with restrictions

WOODSFIELD — Monroe County’s senior center reopened its doors to older residents last week, although restrictions will remain in place for the time being. Michele Hollins, program director of the senior center, said the center has kept its services partially going throughout the pandemic but fully re-opened the inside of the facility for congregate meals Tuesday. The center held a “soft opening” in May, when two meals a week were offered to residents. Hollins said after a safe and successful soft opening, they were confident to open five days a week.

A troubling situation has been brewing in Monroe County, where two Swiss Hills Career Center teachers have been accused of wrongdoing. Initially, the situation was investigated as a crime; however, law enforcement and the county prosecutor determined that criminal charges were not warranted. Superintendent Robert Caldwell had filed a criminal complaint with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office against heavy equipment operation instructors at the school for allegedly using equipment outside the designated zone of operation and taking firewood without permission.

Monroe County planning to construct a fuel station

WOODSFIELD — A proposed fuel station project that would supply fuel to multiple entities throughout the county is moving forward. The Monroe County Transportation Improvement District is hoping to secure funding through the Ohio Department of Transportation’s TID Program to help fund the construction of a new fuel station that would provide gasoline and diesel fuel to county entities including the engineer’s office, sheriff’s office and the park board. The project would save the county funds by enabling it to purchase fuel in bulk and allow the county to have a facility with a backup power station, according to officials.

WOODSFIELD — Monroe County Sheriff Charles Black announced Friday that the murder of a Beallsville man has been solved. Around 9:30 p.m. May 18, the sheriff’s department received a 911 call from a female who said she had found her son inside their home on Varner Ridge Road and believed he was dead.
