Monroe County deputy injured in crash after jumping inside car with fleeing suspect

A Monroe County deputy was injured Wednesday morning after a suspect drove away from a traffic stop and crashed while he and the deputy were inside the vehicle. Deputy Dalton Mosley stopped a vehicle with no tag displayed on Interstate 75 near the northbound mile marker 183. Mosley was then notified that Darion Ponder, the driver of the vehicle, was wanted on fleeing and obstruction charges out of Mitchell and Webster Counties in Georgia.

MONROE COUNTY, Ga.-- On June 16, a Mary Persons High School teacher took it upon himself to make sure that a little-known civil rights leader got the recognition she deserved. Mark Smith, a Social Studies teacher at Mary Persons, set out on a two-year mission to make sure that Jo Ann Robinson's story was not forgotten.

Culloden man gets 20 years prison for identity thefts

A Culloden man who stole the identity and credit of nearly 400 victims around Monroe County and beyond was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Wednesday, June 2. Leonard Tyler Curry, 27, of 510 Fuller Road, Culloden was sentenced by Judge Tommy Wilson after pleading guilty to identity fraud, theft, forgery, and RICO violations. Curry was arrested in January 2020 after Monroe and Bibb deputies raided his home. Sheriff Brad Freeman said Curry was stealing mail from mail boxes, many times mailings for pre-approved credit cards, and using them to secure credit in his victim’s names. Freeman said that Curry would contact the credit card company and change the address of the pre-approved credit card to get access to the credit.

Walmart begins $1.6 million renovation

The Forsyth Walmart has begun a $1.6 million renovation that will include updating the restrooms, adding more self checkout lanes and even creating a space for a future unnamed tenant. The renovation will also give more room for on-line grocery pickup, said Brett Hanes, who handles building inspections for Monroe County. Crews have already cordoned off part of the parking lot for their construction zone. The Forsyth Walmart was opened in 2010. Walmart officials said the store will remain open as normal throughout the renovation. Above are the plans submitted to the county.

Ga. firefighter hospitalized after battling house fire

MONROE COUNTY, Ga. — One firefighter was injured and transported to the hospital while battling a house fire that displaced eight people, including six children. First responders were able to get everyone out of the house safely, but a Monroe County firefighter suffered from heat exhaustion and extreme dehydration and was transported to Monroe County Hospital. The firefighter is expected to make a full recovery, WMAZ 13 reported.
