Prichard Police: Man impersonates officer, kidnaps victim and tries to extort victim’s family

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) -Investigators said Byron Thomas pretended he was a police officer, kidnapped another man, and tried to extort the victim’s family for more than $8,000. Prichard Police said Thomas went to the man’s house on Benjamin Street in an old sheriff’s deputy cruiser he bought at an auction. According to detectives, Thomas told the man he had a warrant for his arrest, handcuffed and shackled him, then put him in his car.

Suspended USA police chief resigns; university won’t say if situation is resolved

Following the resignation of University of South Alabama’s police chief, it remains unclear whether an unspecified “personnel matter” is a closed case or not. Longtime USA chief Zeke Aull was placed on administrative leave in early June; a university statement issued at the time said the move was made “pending the resolution of a personnel matter.” School officials declined to make further comment at the time.

Foley PD seeks public’s help identifying pair accused in jewelry theft

FOLEY, Ala. (WALA) - The Foley Police Department is seeking the public’s help identifying a man and woman wanted for allegedly stealing jewelry from a jewelry store. Officers and detectives with the Foley PD responded to Alabama Goldsmith Jewelers in the 3800 block of South McKenzie Street on Aug. 5 in reference to a theft. Investigators said a man and a woman had entered the store and picked out an undisclosed amount of jewelry with the assistance of a sales clerk. When the sales clerk became distracted by another customer, the subjects concealed the jewelry and left without paying.
