Burn bans in effect in Miner and Brookings counties

A couple of area counties have put burn bans into effect. The Miner County Board of Commissioners put it’s burn ban into effect on Tuesday. All open burning of any substance is prohibited within any or all of the unincorporated area of Miner County until the ban has been rescinded by the commission. Violators of Miner County’s burn ban ordinance could face a maximum penalty of thirty days in jail and a two-hundred dollar fine.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office involved in pursuit and arrest

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office was involved in a pursuit Thursday night that later resulted in the arrest of the individual involved on Friday morning. Sheriff Tim Walburg said that just before 11:00 Thursday night, the Sheriff’s Office was advised of a pursuit that originated in Miner County and was headed east into Lake County. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office was able to spike the tires of the vehicle being chased by the Miner County Sheriff’s Office. The driver then pulled over and took off running after three of the four tires on the vehicle went flat. Walburg said law enforcement searched for him during the evening and were not able to locate him. He said they learned that the man was involved in an assault in Mitchell earlier and took off in a car that he didn’t own.

City of Howard to implement new municipal tax rate July 1st

A Miner County community will be one of four in the state that will implement a new municipal tax rate on July 1st. The city of Howard is imposing a one-percent municipal gross receipts tax rate on lodging, eating establishments, alcoholic beverages, and ticket sales or admissions to places of amusement, athletic and cultural events. This tax is in addition to it’s two-percent general sales and use tax rate.
