Waycross Leadership Visits Memorial Drive Elementary

Leadership Waycross recently toured Memorial Drive Elementary School as a part of their Education Day. The community members were provided information about the school and given a tour by fifth grade representatives from the National Elementary Honor Society (pictured front row L to R) Olivia J., Jamirah M., Dalton Y., Isaiah R., William H., Easton S., and Noah D. The students did a fantastic job leading and discussing key points about the school with the community members. They also learned about the different roles the members have in our community.

Teen Maze 2022

Students at Ware County and Waycross middle schools will experience Teen Maze this week. Teen Maze is a skit that portrays a party scene and following car crash that leads to disastrous consequences. After viewing the skit, the youths will hear a panel of community professionals address the consequences of the party and crash and offer advice on how to make good choices based on what has just been portrayed.

Victims of Domestic Abuse Honored by The Magnolia House

The Magnolia House Shelter for the Abused loacted in Waycross held an event at Plant Park Monday morning honoring the victims of domestic abuse. First Responders from the Waycross Police Department and the Ware County Sheriff’s Department and other citizens from the Waycross community placed white flowers in the fountain to represent the lives that have been lost due to domestic violence. The colored flowers represent the victims that have worked and participated in the Magnolia House’s program.

Alleged intoxicated suspect escapes traffic stop, rams police car, and flees on foot

Jimmy Andre Crumbry, a convicted felon who has served several stints in prison, is now facing an aggravated assault charge against a police officer after he allegedly rammed into her patrol car as he was fleeing a traffic stop. The officer also reported having witnessed Crumby "waving a gun around" when he exited the vehicle, causing her to leave the scene and request backup.

Food Safety at the Swamp

Waycross, Georgia may be most famous for its swamp—the majestic Okefenokee Swamp. The Okefenokee is a 438,000-acre wetland full of alligators, water lilies, many miles of kayak trails, and inspiring views. Outside of the swamp—and just as inspiring—is the growing local food scene in Waycross that includes a maker/producer market called the WayGreen Local Fare Market and a Family Farm Share program. The Family Farm Share–made up of the organizations Action Pact, WayGreen, Inc., Ware Children’s Initiative, and Georgia Organics–provides low-cost food boxes that are sourced from local farmers and are designed with and for the families of young children at Action Pact’s Head Start campus.

Man charged with aggravated assault after allegedly choking female

Glenn Cooper, 45, was recently arrested on an aggravated assault charge after he was accused of choking a female for not doing as he said sooner. According to the officer, the victim had several red marks on her throat. However, Cooper denied the assault, claiming "his hands happened to be up" after she jumped on him.

Lady Trojans win four out of five last week

The Lady Trojans had a busy week as they went 4-1 including wins over #3 ranked Wayne County and #8 ranked Alcovy. The Coffee squad started the week with a 4-1 win over Wayne at home as Erin Robinson scattered 4 hits in the win. Goat show association announces county winners

On a chilly Saturday morning of September 24, the Coffee County Show Goat Association held their 2022 County Goat Show. 29 goats were shown between nine competitors which include Graci Barton, Rayley Batten, Heidi Chancey, Avelyn Dockery, Mari Fletcher, Hayden Gay, Hollyn Gay, Kyleigh Gay, and Gunner Hutto. For Cloverleaf Showmanship (Grades 3-5), Hollyn Gay placed first. Kyleigh Gay placed first in Intermediate Showmanship (Grades 7-9). For Junior Showmanship (Grades 10-11), Mari Fletcher placed first. For Senior Showmanship, Heidi Chancey placed first. As for Grand Champions, Kyleigh Gay won first with her wether, and Hollyn Gay won with her doe. Heidi Chancey’s wether and doe went home Reserve Champions.

Ware County Teen Maze

Being a teenager is a time of tremendous possibilities however stress, anxiousness, and depression can turn those possibilities into mass confusion or worse. Teens struggle daily trying to fit in with their peers, perform athletically, and excel academically. Just being responsible or irresponsible can raise their stress levels and can cause a variety of unwelcome behaviors. It is important that youth receive open communication frequently allowing them time to explore their thoughts and feelings, find their voice, and realize “My life matters. My choices matter.” The goal of the Ware County Teen Maze is to address these and other issues empowering students to make the right choices.

City receives CDBG funds for Head Start center expansion

The City of Douglas is among forty Georgia communities that will receive more than $35 million in federal grants to help grow their local economies. The Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) announced on September 23, 2022 that Douglas has been awarded $1,000,000 in grant funds through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. The funds will be allocated to expand the current Early Head Start and Head Start facility.
