A 58 year old man was killed Saturday (Aug. 6, 2022) after a two motorcycle accident 18 miles west of Hayes. According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, about 11am Saturday, the motorcycles were westbound on Highway 34 when a 2013 Harley-Davidson FLHX motorcycle rear-ended a westbound 2013 Harley-Davidson FLHX motorcycle that had slowed down.

One dead in Saturday motorcycle crash

STURGIS — A man was killed Saturday morning on west of Hayes. According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, just before 11 a.m. 18 miles west of Hayes, a 2013 Harley-Davidson FLHX motorcycle was westbound Highway 34 when it rear-ended a second westbound 2013 Harley-Davidson FLHX motorcycle that had slowed down. The 58-year-old male driver of the first motorcycle died later at a Rapid City hospital. The 68-year-old male driver of the second motorcycle sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the Philip hospital. Neither driver was wearing a helmet.

/ 2nd Annual Meghan Newsam Community Celebration

The second annual Meghan Newsam Community Celebration happened July 29-31. 9 hole Ball Smack kicked off the festivities on Friday evening. Saturday morning a 5K color run/walk took place at the city park followed by water games. Early afternoon found folks gathering to watch Soap Box Derby races. Contestants (divided into two categories of below or over 12 years of age) were timed as they rode/drove their derby cars down the hill. Following the races the community enjoyed a watermelon feed. Saturday evening at the Murdo Rodeo Grounds a concert series was held. Emmy Newsam opened the show, followed by The Panhandlers (featuring Jones County native Dave Hockenbary), then Clare Dunn, a country musician performed. The Garage Boys, a rock band from outside of Las Vegas wrapped up the night. Sunday featured Cowboy Church at the rodeo grounds and story time, read by Jennifer Strait, at the Main St. gazebo.

MURDO, S.D. (KELO.com) — Names have been released in a fatal crash Sunday east of Murdo. The South Dakota Highway Patrol says 21-year-old Joshua Trojan from Clarkson, Michigan, was driving a Ford Edge on Interstate 90 that went into the ditch and rolled. He sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. His passenger, 20-year-old Helena Cortes of Clarkson, Michigan, was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Name released from fatal one-car crash east of Murdo

MURDO, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - A Michigan woman has been identified as the passenger who died in the July 3 one-vehicle crash east of Murdo. According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, a 2011 Ford Edge SUV was westbound on I-90 when it left the roadway to the left, went into the ditch, and rolled. The driver was a 21-year-old male who sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. He was transported by ambulance to the Pierre hospital. Authorities say he was wearing a seatbelt.
