Rezoning may pave way for new business

County supervisors re-designate site in Saluda; take back control of Cooks Corner location formerly earmarked for Tractor Supply store. The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) voted, 5-0, Tuesday, May 3, to approve a rezoning of land in Saluda on U.S. Route 17 Business across the road from the Dollar General and Massey Urbanna Builders Supply Co. LLC, from Low Density Rural (LDR) to General Business (GB) and Village Community (VC).

New building considered for rescue squad in Bethpage area

The current lease on the building that houses the Urbanna branch of the Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad (MCVRS) expires in two years, Tina Mennett, MCVRS secretary told the Urbanna Town Council at its April 28 meeting. A parcel of land on Lord Mott Road, near where the former tennis courts are, has been donated by Bethpage Camp-Resort to build a rescue squad station.

MC Kiwanis Club names Virginia Reinhardt Teen of the Year

Current boat tax rate stays

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) approved on a 3-2 vote Thursday, April 28, a tax rate change to balance the fiscal year 2023 (FY 23) $31,149,744 budget. The result of the vote amounts to a six cent tax rate increase on real estate and leaves the personal property tax on five-ton and heavier boats at 62 cents.

Libby Oliver leads Middlesex softball team in batting average

MHS squad gets convincing win over King & Queen Central. The Middlesex High School (MHS) varsity softball team got its first win this season with a 20-1 victory over King and Queen Central. The Lady Chargers lost a “heartbreaker” to West Point 12-7, said MHS Coach Jennifer Morotini. “Despite a losing record, the girls are coming around at the plate and have played consistently solid defense.”

Kathy Shackelford Thrift

Kathy Shackelford Thrift, 68, of Hartfield, passed away on Sunday, May 1, 2022. She was a member of Hermitage Baptist Church and a former member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Upper Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department in Water View. Kathy served the citizens of Middlesex County for more than 20 years, culminating with her service as the county treasurer for the last three years. Previously she was employed with Chesapeake Corporation in West Point and Urbanna Auto and Marine.
