Microsoft is testing Android 12.1 and other improvements for Windows 11

It seems like Microsoft isn’t resting on its laurels when it comes to the system that lets Windows 11 run Android apps: on Friday, the company announced an update that upgrades the version of Android running on your computer and helps make the apps feel more at home running on a PC. The Windows Subsystem for Android update is currently only available to test for Windows Insiders, but that’s probably a good thing for reasons we’ll touch on in just a moment.

How to Transform Your Android Phone Into a Microsoft Phone

Android is owned by Google, so most of its built-in apps are from Google. However, the Android OS is open source and is pretty adaptive to customizations. This adaptability allows you to modify your Android device the way you want. If you are a die-hard Microsoft user or simply bored with the traditional Google or manufacturer-skinned Android, it is quite easy to replace your phone’s default look and apps with Microsoft alternatives. Let's take a look.

Linux malware is booming, so stay secure, Microsoft warns

One particular strain of Linux malware has seen tremendous growth in the last six months, Microsoft says, urging Linux device owners to secure their endpoints. The Redmond software giant claims XorDDoS malware’s usage in the last six months rose by 254%. While XorDDoS’ primary use case is, as its name would suggest, to build a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) botnet, it can also be used as a gateway for the distribution of additional payloads.

Microsoft Build 2022: What to expect for Teams, Edge, and Windows

Unlike Google and Apple, Microsoft Build is usually committed to being a developer-heavy event. That means more on-stage coding and developer sessions and fewer Surface announcements. Microsoft: This botnet is growing fast and hunting for servers with weak passwords

Microsoft has seen a 254% increase in activity over the past few months from XorDDoS, a roughly eight-year-old network of infected Linux machines that is used for distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. Microsoft censors Bing searches for Xi Jinping, Tiananmen Square: study

Microsoft censors suggestions on its Bing search engine for American users looking up Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Tiananmen Square protests’ “tank man” and other politically sensitive terms, according to a new study.  While typing in a term like “Joe Biden” into Bing results in a drop-down “autofill” box suggesting popular search options, Microsoft removed the box for American and Canadian users searching hot-button Chinese terms, researchers from Citizen Lab said.  Other names allegedly censored by Bing include Li Wenliang, a doctor-turned-whistleblower in Wuhan who angered Chinese authorities by speaking out about the severity of the coronavirus in early 2020; Guo Wengui,...

Microsoft updates the Windows 11 Android Subsystem to Android 12L

Android apps refuse to be constrained to just your phone, and there's been a big effort lately to bring them to platforms like Chrome OS. That includes traditional PCs, too, and after a rather extended Windows Insider beta test, Android apps and games finally became widely available for Windows 11 users. We're still waiting on access to spread everywhere, but that hasn’t stopped Microsoft from working to improve the experience. Today we learn about the latest fruits of those efforts, an updated Windows Subsystem for Android with a software bump to Android 12.1 (aka Android 12L).

Windows 11: Microsoft just put a search box in the middle of the desktop in new preview build

Microsoft is testing a new search box, formerly in the Taskbar, that's now located right in the middle of the Windows 11 desktop interface. A web search box located in the middle of the Windows 11 desktop might not be a highly requested feature from users, but Microsoft is trying it out anyway with Insiders in the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 25120, just released to the Dev Channel.

Microsoft censored sensitive Chinese search topics, even in the U.S.

Microsoft Bing has exported Chinese censorship abroad, according to a new report by The University of Toronto's Citizen Lab. Bing searches for national figures, leaders within the Chinese Communist Party, dissidents and topics that Beijing considers politically sensitive did not appear in auto-suggest in North America, according to the report. Among the search terms that didn't generate autocomplete suggestions were searches for President Xi Jinping, the late human rights activist Liu Xiaobo and searches related to the Tiananmen Square massacre.
