Metallica: Some Kind of Monster – classic documentary is a cautionary, real-life Spinal Tap tale

In 2001, Metallica were a band in extreme turmoil. They had just sued Napster and their own fans for copyright infringement; the bass player exited stage left when vocalist James Hetfield went on a control trip and blocked his side project; and various injuries had sidelined them from touring, including a jet ski accident and neck injuries from excessive head-banging. Compared with what would follow, this would turn out to be a period of relative calm.

Listen to early “Enter Sandman” demo James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich recorded in 1990

Lars Ulrich has been drumming for Metallica since 1981 when he and guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield formed the band in Los Angeles, California. This year the band will pay tribute to their biggest selling album to date, 1991’s Metallica, affectionately known as the Black Album. The first track on the album and perhaps their biggest song ever is “Enter Sandman.” As part of the celebration, Metallica has released a demo version of the iconic track.

Listen to Metallica's Original 1990 Demo of 'Enter Sandman'

Metallica on Tuesday (June 22) shared an audio preview of their previously unreleased July 12, 1990, demo of "Enter Sandman." The issue of the basement recording represents an unprecedented lifting of the veil on the inner workings of the band's hit 1991 The Black Album single that would go on to become their signature song.

The metal legends have announced The Black Album in Black & White, a photo book capturing rare and previously unpublished images that were shot by acclaimed rock photographer Ross Halfin during the recording process and tour behind ‘Tallica’s classic 1991 album.
