Wausau East v. West log game canceled for 2021

The annual matchup between Wausau East and Wausau West’s football team won’t happen in 2021, Wausau School District officials confirmed on Wednesday. The Log Game tradition traces back to 1971, when Ted Harenda, a parent of two students, teamed up with three local businesses to create the log trophy, in part as a fundraiser for foreign exchange programs at the schools.

Wausau East shifts to 8-player, varsity reserve football for 2021 season

WAUSAU - Wausau East High School will be taking a "combined 8-man and varsity reserve approach" to its football team for the 2021 season. District activities director Kurt Vanden Heuvel said the move came after 15 upperclassmen players committed to participate in the upcoming season. Numbers were reassessed on the first contact day, with no additional participants committing.

Wausau East football adjusts after lack of participation

The Wausau East High School football team will not have a traditional varsity football team this year, after too few student athletes committed to the sport. According to a Wausau School District news release, the school will have a small senior team this year that can play both 8-man and varsity reserve football games to the “greatest extent possible,” depending on scheduling availability. Varsity reserve is essentially junior varsity with the understanding that seniors also play in the game.

William M. Hickson, a longtime Wausau School District educator who taught and coached for nearly 40 years, has died. He was 85. If you went to middle school in Wausau between 1961 and 2000, you either had him as a teacher or coach – or at the very least knew who he was.
