Rockmart man killed in wreck on Ga. 101 Thursday night

A 41-year-old Rockmart man is dead following a single vehicle wreck on Ga. 101 Thursday night. Juan Roman Flores was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:30 p.m. Thursday by Floyd County Coroner Gene Proctor. The preliminary report shows Flores was traveling at speeds of 100 mph when he went off the road near the Silver Creek post office. The vehicle flipped end over end for 400 feet before coming to a rest, Proctor says.

Floyd County Clerk of Courts Questioned About Actions Caught on Video

The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office has now asked the GBI to investigate an incident involving Floyd County Clerk of Courts Barbara Penson. Video footage of the longtime elected official shows Ms. Penson striking her cell phone with a hammer on a concrete wall near the Floyd County Courthouse. Ms. Penson then brought the damaged cell phone back inside the courthouse, according to reports. Penson has said that the cell phone belonged to her and was not public property, but admitted that hitting the phone with a hammer at the courthouse was “probably not the right place” to do it.

UPDATE on “Hazardous Chemical Spill” in Rainsville

The DeKalb County Emergency Management Agency issued an Evacuation Order that was in effect for approximately 1,000 feet from the intersection of Highways 35 and 75 in Rainsville. That warning was issued at around 10:30 on Thursday morning due to a HazMat spill which caused a “threat to life” safety situation.

Two people killed after multi-vehicle accident in Ravenden

A multi-vehicle accident near the Lawrence and Sharp county line has claimed the lives of two people. According to the Arkansas State Police, Kyle Robert Simmons, 30, of Hoxie, and Anna Marie Swearinger, 30, of Rome, Ga., were killed after a 2005 Cadillac driven by Simmons apparently crossed the centerline as it traveled south on Highway 63 in Ravenden and triggered a multi-vehicle accident.
