Marion man sentenced to over 37 years following illegal drug distribution conviction

MCDOWELL COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — A McDowell County man has been sentenced to 37-47 years in prison following a March 2020 arrest for illegal drug distribution. On Thursday, March 5, 2020, detectives with the McDowell County Drug Enforcement were conducting surveillance on U.S. 70 East and Harmony Grove Road in Nebo as part of their ongoing investigation into reported illegal drug distribution activities.

Two from Nebo face drug charges

Two people face drug charges after local authorities obtained a search warrant on a home, according to a report. Lt. Chris Taylor of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged 55-year-old Charles Robert Brown, of 46 Mae Drive in Nebo, with trafficking in methamphetamine, possession intent to manufacture, sell and distribute methamphetamine, possession intent to manufacture, sell and distribute heroin, possession of methamphetamine, possession of heroin and maintaining a dwelling to keep a controlled substance.

Woman pleads guilty to felony extortion against former Judge Randy Pool

A Marion woman pleaded guilty on Monday to felony extortion against former Chief District Judge Randy Pool, who presided over courts in McDowell and Rutherford counties. Jennifer Morgan Tierce, 37, of Stroud Street, Marion, pleaded guilty to felony extortion on Monday in McDowell County Superior Court. In exchange for a guilty plea, Tierce received a prayer for judgment, meaning she will serve no jail time or probation. And although she has been found guilty, a prayer for judgment means she has been forgiven by the court. Judge Nathaniel Poovey handed down the sentence.

Brittany Nichole Branch, 31, of Mills Creek Rd. in Old Fort, was charged by Deputy L. Tipton with felony possession of methamphetamine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. One person is dead in a drowning at Lake James in McDowell County.

One person is dead in a drowning at Lake James on Sunday, according to a report from McDowell County Emergency Services. Emergency personnel were called to a private dock in Goodman's Cove area of Lake James. One victim was reported to have jumped from a dock into the water and never resurfaced. Emergency personnel and rescue divers recovered the victim in approximately 25 feet of water. The McDowell County Sheriff's Office is the main investigating agency.
