Where to See the Bats in Austin (*Other Than the Congress Avenue Bridge)

While the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge is the most popular destination for spotting Austin’s favorite flying mammal, there are other places in Central Texas to watch Mexican free-tailed bats emerge at dusk in the spring through fall. If you want a quieter view of this natural wonder, head to Round Rock, where nearly half a million bats emerge from the intersection of I-35 and McNeil Road. A bit further west, Eckert James River Bat Cave outside Mason, Texas, boasts one of the largest bat nurseries in the country. Near Fredericksburg, the abandoned railroad tunnel at Old Tunnel State Park hosts up to 3 million bats from May to October. But the biggest bat colony in Texas is at Bracken Cave near Natural Bridge Caverns, which offers joint tour packages to the public.
