P.T. Barnum would be proud. Mr. Barnum, for those of you who are unfamiliar, was THE master showman/salesman/self-promoter of 19th-century America. Of course this was all well before smartphones, television, radio and motion pictures and for the most part even the phonograph, so when Mr. Barnum and his world of wonders came to town, it was an EVENT, and residents of large cities ate it up, as did the hicks in the sticks.

Memories from time spent with retiring director

The very first column that I wrote for The Delaware Gazette was published on Oct. 3, 2015. At the time, I was lucky enough to take over a 27-year tradition that our previous director, Mary Jane Santos, had begun in 1988. My primary reason for taking the reins as the new contributor for “Glad You Asked” was to give our then-incoming Director George Needham an opportunity to acclimate himself to the area and the library district before handing him a weekly writing assignment.

Vets to DC photos

Family and community members gathered Friday at the Logan County Fairgrounds and in downtown Bellefontaine to offer a grand send-off for the Logan County Vets to DC and their well-wishes to the 46 distinguished veteran guests, two of whom served in the Korean War and the remaining who served during the Vietnam War era. Don Hardman, left, offers a hearty handshake to fellow Vietnam War veteran Jack Ferryman of Urbana as Ferryman prepares to load the bus bound for the nation’s capital on the organization’s sixth trip. Hardman said he attended the trip in 2019 and now enjoys being able to support others in this memorable opportunity. The two charter buses with the veterans, traveling companions and volunteers are expected to arrive back at the fairgrounds about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, for individuals who would like to welcome them back home.
