Marshall County Council Approves Additional 911 Dispatcher

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department is adding a new 911 dispatcher. Sheriff Matt Hassel told the county council this month that the switch to a county-wide dispatch center a few years ago resulted in 30-to-40-percent increase in his department’s dispatch services. Now, he says the funding is in place to increase staffing to keep up with demand.

Duane Longacre Sentenced to 97 Years in the Indiana Department of Corrections

Duane Longacre was sentenced to 97 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections in a hearing in Marshall County Superior Court No. 1 Wednesday afternoon. A jury found him guilty on charges of murder, arson and resisting law enforcement during a three-day trial in June. Longacre was convicted of murdering Jill McCarty in her home and then setting fire to it on June 28, 2020 in Plymouth.

Elkhart Man Arrested after Alleged Physical Altercation with Marshall County Police

An Elkhart man was arrested Sunday, July 18 after an alleged physical altercation with officers from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department. Officers were called to a property in the 3200 block of 3rd Road in Bremen after a resident reported a suspicious person trespassing on the property Sunday afternoon. Police say the person, later identified as 18-year-old Landan Shelt, fled officers on foot in a field at the corner of State Road 331 and 3rd Road. Officers caught up to Shelt, but he resisted officers and a physical altercation took place, according to the report. Shelt reportedly fled from officers again and ran through two more fields before he was taken into custody.

A Marshall County grand jury met over the last three days to investigate three cases dating back to 2019. Those include two deadly traffic crashes and a building fire. A person was indicted in one of the traffic accidents, and we found out that the person of interest in the building fire is wanted for questioning and other unrelated warrants.
