Marble Falls announces death of Fire Captain Sam Stacks

MARBLE FALLS, Texas — The City of Marble Falls on Friday announced the death of Fire Captain Sam Stacks. "Captain Stacks had been a valued member of the City since Jan. 4, 2005. He dedicated his life to serving and protecting the people of his community," the City said in a press release. "Captain Stacks exemplified heroism by doing what our first responders do every day: put on their uniform, leave their loved ones, and carry out their sworn duty to protect and serve the residents of our city."

SHERMAN, Texas – The Eastern District of Texas sentenced a Leander man to 48 years in federal prison for fraud and money laundering violations. James Clark Nix, 73, was found guilty by a jury on Apr. 21, 2022, of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, and aiding and abetting. Nix was sentenced to 576 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Amos L. Mazzant on Sep. 22, 2022.

Lakeway OKs budget, tax rate

The Lakeway City Council voted unanimously on Monday to approve a $17.7 million budget for the 2023 fiscal year and the lowest tax rate in the city's history. The approved tax rate of $0.1290 is 17% lower than last year’s tax rate of $0.1545. City spokesman Jarrod Wise said this change will result in an average $40 reduction for the average homeowner’s annual tax bill. The no new revenue tax rate, which is the rate that will raise the same amount of property tax revenue as last year, is also $0.1290.
