A garage and vehicle were damaged Monday in a structure fire that occurred in west Winfield. Around 3:15 p.m., the Winfield Fire-EMS Department responded to a structure fire at 1124 Pecan Lane. The residence was unoccupied at the time and multiple neighbors and a lawn mowing crew saw the smoke and reported the fire, according to fire marshal Chad Mayberry.

Winfield fire crews were able to save a house from being destroyed by fire Monday afternoon.

May 15, 1983 ~ July 2, 2022 (age 39) Tishia Marie Green, loving mother, daughter, and sister, passed away on July 2, 2022 after losing her battle with brain cancer. Tishia was born May 15, 1983 in Hagerstown, Maryland to Vickie Sue Neal and James “Jimmy” Green. She was hard working and very independent, which led her to being an entrepreneur who was on her way. Tishia always said that she didn’t need nobody to cosign for her.

Body Bowling leagues will be returning to Kay County bowling centers over the next two months. The sale of Ponca Bowl in March 2022 caused the leagues at Ponca Bowl to end their bowling season early or move and finish their 2021-2022 in a different bowling center. Fortunately, there are two bowling centers in Kay County for people to enjoy bowling and join bowling leagues. Lucas Lanes in Blackwell and The Hub in the Tonkawa Casino both have robust league schedules offering a number of leagues for people regardless of skill level.

On Saturday, Aug. 6, the Ponca City Fire and Life Safety Council and the Ponca City Fire Foundation teamed up to hold their “All Fired Up” fundraiser banquet and auction. All Fired Up is the only fundraiser that they do and all of the profits go back into the fire department to better the community. This money is used to support things like the new training center, free car seat checks, fire prevention programs in the community’s schools, and more. They had a great turnout and were completely sold out of tickets, thanks to the community.

NEWKIRK — Judge Lee Turner swore in new Kay County Excise Board member Jeff Wilson today. Wilson replaces the retiring Joe Carey. Wilson is the former Newkirk Middle School principal. He joins J.C. Estes and Steve Austin on the board.

The City Arts Organization, formerly known as the Ponca City Art Association (PCAA), hosted a retrospective exhibition celebrating the life of artist Gene V. Dougherty. Dougherty was an accomplished artist in watercolor and oils, characterizing the American West with an open, clear, and refreshing realism. Dougherty taught art at Northern Oklahoma College (NOC) in Tonkawa for 31 years and is known for his paintings of local buildings, wildlife, hunting scenes, landscapes, and Native American dancers.

The Ponca City Chamber of Commerce “Stuff The Bus” with school supplies will be held at Walmart on East Prospect on Saturday, August 20th, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. They will be set up at each door and hope people will donate both school supplies or money.

The Lady Cats have some scrimmages under their belts, but will officially initiate the season by participating in a tournament Friday and Saturday in Sand Springs. The eighth grade team was scheduled to host Bartlesville Tuesday.

James (Jimmy) Bird, 77, formerly of Ponca city, passed away unexpectedly in Cottonwood, AZ, Monday, July 18th. As per his wishes he was cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date at Sunset Lake.
