SALYERSVILLE – With the statewide mask mandate ending this week, Magoffin County has had only two COVID-19 cases over the past two weeks. To date, 1,127 people have tested positive for COVID-19 from Magoffin County, with one new case in the last nine days. The death rate stands at 22 COVID-19 related deaths in Magoffin, which includes the deaths reported from the Salyersville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. At press time, no new hospitalizations are being reported from Magoffin County.

MAGOFFIN COUNTY – As of Wednesday, June 9, 911 calls from Verizon Wireless customers in Magoffin County now will be answered by Magoffin 911 dispatchers. Until late last year, any cell phone calls from Magoffin County to 911 were automatically sent to Kentucky State Police Post 9, in Pikeville, with the caller usually having to repeat their emergency first to the KSP dispatcher and, again, once the call was transferred to Magoffin 911.

SALYERSVILLE – The Magoffin County Fiscal Court met in special session on June 3, holding the second reading of the budget for the upcoming fiscal year. In the brief Thursday afternoon meeting, the court approved the second reading of the 2021/2022 county budget, which had already been verified as meeting all the state’s standards from Frankfort, as well as approved the agreement with the Administrative Office of the Courts, providing the county a reimbursement of expenses for the justice center, which have been estimated at $264,400.

SALYERSVILLE – Senior Holly Handshoe and freshman Jaden Williams split time in the circle at the pitcher position for Magoffin County during the 2021 high school softball season. A pair of experienced high school softball pitchers, Handshoe and Williams were a talented tandem for former 15th Region champion Magoffin County.

US 460 – A Magoffin man died after a two-vehicle collision on Friday, May 28 in Johnson County. Johnson County Sheriff Doug Saylor told Mortimer Media Group at approximately 8:12 p.m. on May 28 Paintsville EMS, Oil Springs Volunteer Fire Department and Rockhouse Volunteer Fire Department and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to an accident with injuries on US 460 between Paintsville and Salyersville, in Johnson County, with the wreck occurring between Lower Twin and Barnett’s Creek.

GUN CREEK – A Magoffin man remains behind bars at press time after allegedly breaking into a home where his estranged wife was staying and holding her at knifepoint for approximately an hour before she was able to load her shotgun and force him to leave the residence at gunpoint.
