Police: Suspects beat, burned victim during Kan. home robbery

LYON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating six suspects in connection with a home-invasion violent attack. On May 2, police responded to an apartment building in northeast Emporia after multiple 911 calls indicating people were running in the area and one person was reported yelling for help, according to Police Captain Lisa Hayes.

Lyon County Attorney’s Office files formal charges against multiple pursuit suspects

Formal charges and preliminary hearings have been set for multiple individuals allegedly involved in a series of vehicle pursuits in and around Emporia. According to Lyon County Attorney Marc Goodman, 51-year-old Troy Eastman has been charged with single counts of felony flee and elude and felony obstruction following a pursuit that allegedly occurred on around 9:10 pm Monday, May 9. Eastman reportedly fled from a planned traffic stop in the 200 block of Road 147 and was later apprehended in the 1500 block of Road 140 following a brief vehicle and foot pursuit.

Emporia City Commission to convene for action/study session ahead of annual joint meeting with Lyon County Commission and RDA Wednesday morning

Emporia City Commissioners have a pair of jampacked agendas ahead of them for their upcoming action and study sessions Wednesday. As part of their action agenda, commissioners may adopt commission strategic planning goals and an extension of a memorandum of understanding with Birds Rider Inc. for the city’s sidewalk scooter program. Commissioners will also consider four ordinances for the rezoning of property at 224 E. 6th Ave. and 1116 Constitution from high density residential to general commercial and 1104 Burns Street from low-density residential to medium-density residential.

CORONAVIRUS: 26 new cases reported in Lyon County Monday

Double-digit COVID case increases continue for Lyon County according to Public Health’s latest data report. According to public health’s first report of the week, 26 new cases developed over the past weekend. This follows an increase of 50 cases last Wednesday and 37 new cases Friday. Public Health has stated the ongoing increase in cases both locally and nationally are likely due to an omicron variant.

Free Landfill Days continues at Lyon County Transfer Station

The annual Free Landfill Days is underway at the Lyon County Transfer Station, and weekend traffic has been busy. Residents in Lyon and Chase counties get one free trip if they have their April electric bill. They can unload up to 1,000 pounds for free. If they go above that limit, they will be charged standard fees of 24.2 cents per 10 pounds of trash and 13.1 cents per 10 pounds of construction or demolition debris. Residents will also pay standard amounts for disposal of tires or appliances with refrigerants. Vehicle sizes are limited to passenger cars, light trucks up to one ton and trailers. Businesses cannot take part.

Planning Commission gives blessing to various zoning matters Tuesday

The Emporia-Lyon County Metropolitan Area Planning Commission gave its blessing to several zoning matters at its monthly meeting Tuesday. Board members unanimously approved a revised preliminary plan and traffic impact study for the so-called Mahtropolis housing plan near the Trusler Sports Complex after residents expressed concerns about increased traffic on Riley Street. The tentative plan calls for nearly 30 single-family homes in an area bordered by Riley Avenue on the north side, Trusler Road on the south, Whittier Street on the east and Peyton Street on the west.

Emporia Spanish Speakers unveils new program to assist both local shoppers and businesses

Emporia Spanish Speakers is offering a new program aimed at assisting local businesses and residents starting next month. Se Habla Espanol is an eight-week course that is centered around helping individuals in the service community better communicate with local Spanish-speaking residents. Visit Emporia Director Lelan Dains says this is a very pragmatic program for Emporia specifically based on recent census data.

Rollover accident reported northwest of Emporia late Sunday morning

Emergency crews are responding to a reported injury accident northwest of Emporia. Emporia/Lyon County EMS was called to KTA mile marker 151 southbound, 24 miles northwest of Emporia, just before 11 am Sunday. Full details are pending, however, early indications are the accident may have been a rollover involving a single-vehicle.
