NC murder suspect arrested in Virginia Beach

The Robeson County Sheriff's Office says Jordache W. Leach would be charged with first-degree murder after being extradited back to North Carolina. He also was charged with being a fugitive from justice, the sheriff's office says.

Thirty-fourth Annual MLK Parade

Elizabethtown – Preparations are underway for the thirty-fourth (34th) annual parade honoring the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. which will be held in Elizabethtown, North Carolina on Monday, January 16, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. The 2023 theme is “Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Dr. King’s I Have A Dream Speech.” Martin Luther King Day celebrates the life and accomplishment of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. MLK promoted Civil Rights through nonviolent civil disobedience. He is perhaps best known for his “I have a dream…” speech in 1963. He was assassinated in 1968. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day became a federally recognized holiday in 1983. The first year this holiday was observed was 1986, and not by all states. In 2000 it became a nationally observed holiday in all states. Palace Scholars Program Receives Generous Award from The Anonymous Trust

The Anonymous Trust trustees have generously awarded the Tryon Palace Foundation with a generous charitable grant of $170,000 for their Palace Scholars program and for a new educational outreach program. Additionally, the Anonymous Trust has approved two challenge grants that have the potential to raise an additional $120,000 in funding for these programs.

Couch Potato: It’s “Rivalry Week” Between Bladen High Schools

It’s Bladen County’s version of “Rivalry Week.” The two high schools are scheduled to meet five times in athletic contests. It begins tonight (Monday) when West Bladen hosts East Bladen in varsity football. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at The Castle. Both teams have won only once this season. East Bladen has won 20 straight after losing the first game between the schools in 2001.

Residents escape through window after tree crashes into their home in Whiteville

WHITEVILLE, N.C. (WECT) - Crews responded to the scene after a tree crashed into a home in Whiteville on North Lee Street early in the afternoon on Friday, Sept. 30. Five people inside the home were watching TV when the tree fell into their house, blocking access to the doors. First responders helped them escape through a window, and they were all able to escape without injuries.

Ballot harvesting involves illegally collecting mail-in ballots from voters. The harvesters collected blank or incomplete ballots, forged signatures on them and filled in votes for candidates. Column: Fair Bluff mayor: All downtown property owners interested in buyout

Several people in the town of Fair Bluff have asked about what our plans are in regards to some type of groundbreaking ceremony for the uptown project. We have reached out to our project engineers and have discussed that possibility. It will obviously take some level of coordination, but we are thinking about some type of ceremony to draw attention to the historical significance of this project. The existing downtown has been around for over a hundred years. We can all be hopeful that the new uptown will last that long as well. It does seem fitting to have a formal kick-off to this construction project. We also want to obviously ask our Chamber of Commerce to help us with this ceremony. Please stay tuned to this column space in the weeks ahead as we finalize a program for uptown’s start.
