What the land bank found after surveying Toledo's 120,000 properties

A new Lucas County Land Bank survey tells contrasting stories about the 84 square miles and nearly 120,000 individual parcels that make up Toledo. One one hand, it reveals progress since the land bank's last survey in 2015. Canvassers counted about half as many exterior building problems such as peeling paint, roof damage, and unstable foundations. The data confirmed that the land bank and others have made headway carrying out demolitions and repurposing vacant lots in recent years.

Adelante closes its doors while police investigate an employee accused of stealing nearly $400,000 to gamble

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The doors remain temporarily closed at Adelante Inc. after an employee is under investigation accused of stealing nearly $400,000. Adelante – which is a Latino resource center – provides services for substance abuse, pregnant mothers and much more. The president of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee also known as FLOC told me his agency works well with Adelante.

Louise H. Barkan, who oversaw agencies offering drug and alcohol prevention help to children when few others did, died Monday in Kingston of Sylvania. She was 90. The cause of death was not yet known, her husband, Bill Barkan, said. Shortness of breath led to a hospital stay last month, during which she tested negative for coronavirus, but she later tested positive when she was in rehabilitation, he said.

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A Toledo woman was arrested for assaulting an off-duty deputy on Sunday. According to the Toledo Police report, multiple Toledo Police Department crews were dispatched to Ottawa Cove Drive and Suder Avenue after calls of a melee involving multiple people in the intersection. Trial begins for man accused of murder, rape in cold cases

The trial of an Indiana man charged with several counts of rape and murder in three Toledo cold cases from 22 years ago began Monday in the Lucas County Common Pleas Court. Kenneth Marshall, 55, of Hammond, Ind. was arrested in January, 2021, after investigators said his DNA matched the DNA collected at the time of the attacks. Marshall is charged with aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, and six counts of first-degree felony rape with repeat violent offender specifications.
