South Loup girls finish second at C-8 District

The South Loup girls track team were the runner-up's of the C-8 District Meet at Ord on May 13. They finished with 99 points and Ord were the champions with 138 points. Leading the Bobcat girls with two medals in individual events was Halie Recoy in the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash. She was second in the 100 in a time of 12.94 and won the 200 meter dash by clocking a 26.91.

Loup County family receives Leopold Award

LINCOLN — Switzer Ranch of Loup County has been selected as the recipient of the 2021 Nebraska Leopold Conservation Award. Given in honor of renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, the prestigious award recognizes farmers, ranchers and forestland owners who inspire others with their dedication to land, water and wildlife habitat resources in their care, according to a press release Gov. Pete Ricketts’ office. Ricketts presented the award to the family at a ceremony on Wednesday.

LINCOLN — The Switzer family of Loup County joined Gov. Pete Ricketts Wednesday for an announcement that they won this year’s Leopold Conservation Award. Five generations of the family have been involved with their Sand Hills ranch, according to the Sand County Foundation, which sponsors the award. Current family members include Bruce and Sue Ann Switzer; their children, Sarah Sortum and Adam Switzer; and five grandchildren.

COVID19— Phase 1A of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Vaccination Plan is beginning to wrap up, which means the state will soon be moving into Phase 1B. According to Loup Basin Public Health Department, each phase is broken down into tiers to further prioritize who is to be vaccinated. LBPHD has begun scheduling clinics to start vaccinating those 75 years old and older (Phase 1B, Tier I).

Loup Loup Ski Bowl opens

LOUP LOUP — The Loup Loup Ski Bowl opened Dec. 27 for skiing, snowboarding, tubing and luging. The lower hill opened Dec. 23, and officials decided to open the chairlift a few days later after more snow fell. As of Jan. 3, after more post-Christmas snow, the hill had 26.5 inches at the base and 29.5 inches at the top, for a total season snowfall of 29.5 inches.
