It is no secret that LAFC has been one of the best teams this season and have a strong chance at fighting for a MLS Cup. The Black and Gold currently sit in first place with 48 points, leading the Supporters Shield. They also boast a current four game win streak that started on July 8th. Within that streak two of those wins were back to back road victories. Showing that this team can win away from the Banc. Also they have added two immensely talented pieces to their roster. On the defensive end Giorgio Chiellini and Gareth Bale on the attacking end. Both players with experience at the highest level of professional futbol. With an already loaded roster these moves are for winning now. Anything less than a MLS Cup will be considered a failure and questions will continue to be asked about why can’t LAFC win the big one. Holding this team together has been Steve Cherundolo, he has done an exceptional job in his first year. Leading the team to a 15-3-4 record so far this season. Let’s just hope they can finally deliver a title this year.

LAFC took control of the first 10 minutes but had nothing to show. Then in the 14th minute disaster struck a well orchestrated counter attack saw Seattle get numbers up. It was a great weekend for the Black and Gold. Getting their sixth win on the road while also making it back to back road wins. This week’s victim would be the struggling Sporting Kansas City, who sit last in the Western Conference. Once again Giorgio Chiellini would be included in the starting eleven. These starts will be crucial as Chiellini begins to settle with the team and get the necessary reps he needs to be at 100%. The first half would actually start off really well for the home team. As they dominated the first 15 minutes of the match but were not able to find the back of the net. LAFC would almost open up the scoring in the 44th minute. A tremendous goal line clearance by the Kansas defender denied Cifuentes of another goal. The two teams would enter the half tied at nil.

Sunday, July 17th will go down as a historic day not only for LAFC but all of MLS. For that was the day Giorgio Chiellini and Gareth Bale both made their debuts for LAFC. It would not be a walk n he park as Nashville has been one of the better teams this season. Giorgio would be paired with Jesus Murillo and the game would flow through the two defenders. LAFC played to Giorgio’s strength as he would be more of a distributor when the team played out the back. It would be a solid showing for Chiellini and as he gets more reps in he will surely return to form.

The 6-foot-4 and 212-pound defenseman from Osterlund, Sweden played for the Kings last season, scoring 3 goals and 16 assists for 19 points in 41 games. He also recorded 34 penalty minutes. In his 17-year career, Edler has played 966 games, scoring 102 goals and adding 325 assists for 427 points.

June 29th 2022 will go down as a historic day for LAFC. For it was the day that Giorgio Chiellini was presented as the newest member of LAFC. The veteran defender during his conference stated how excited he was to join the team. He expressed a tremendous amount of gratitude to the front office. Chiellini stated that he was not here for a vacation and wanted to compete for titles. A member of the media asked Chiellini how he felt on many stars that join the league are attackers and hardly any defenders. Chiellini responded by saying “Attackers sell tickets, but defense wins the league.” Which perfectly summarizes the mentality that Chiellini will bring to the club. A very playful Chiellini also joked around as to why they even brought him to LA. As according to him “The club already has a top defender” referencing the highly talented Mamadou Fall.

LAFC took on the hot and surging New York Red Bulls this past weekend in a very enjoyable match. However they could not create clear chances in the first half and saw them go tied at 0. The second half saw the Red Bulls trying to take an initiative but they would only come close to target once. From there LAFC would regain the dominance it has been keen to show this season. A pair of substitutions in the 63rd minute saw Kellyn Acosta and Chicho Arango take the field for some action. Four minutes later an extraordinary pass from Vela put Chicho in an immaculate position. From there he would then go on and open up the scoring for the Black and Gold. Two minutes later a miscue from the Red Bulls defense allowed Brian Rodriguez to swoop down the right flank. He would go all the way down to the 18 yard box and here he played a pass to Diego Palacios. Where he would fake out one opponent and then get a shot across and make it 2-0. They would defend the lead and ultimately would get the shutout making it a great day at the Banc.

The NHL just concluded their season awards show and, although the Kings won one award, they have had many awards over the years of the franchise. With Los Angeles winning two Stanley Cups in their history we look at the history of the awards presented to the players of the Los Angeles Kings. Well the international break is over and we finally got some MLS action back into our lives. This past weekend the Black and Gold would make the trip up North. Taking on the reigning Concacaf Champions, the Seattle Sounders. It would be a tight first half with both teams struggling to create chances. However, LAFC led the charge and were the more dangerous team throughout the first half. Once again Stefan Frei held his ground, as he usually does, and denied LAFC all game long. LAFC have signed legendary defender Giorgio Chiellini on a one year deal. Chiellini, who won nine straight Serie A titles from 2011-2020 with Juventus will be presented on June 29th. LAFC this season signed Crepeau, Hollingshead, Sanchez, and Acosta in order to bolster one of their biggest issues, defending. Throughout their short lifespan LAFC has lacked in the defense department causing them to fail in high leverage situations. With Chiellini the hope is to have him steer the ship back on course. While also helping the young talent evolve and take the next step. He also brings a voice of leadership that this team lacks. LAFC have yet to find a solid pairing in the back after Walker Zimmerman left for Nashville and Tristian Blackmon ended up in Vancouver. LAFC’s hope is that Chiellini can help solidify the defense. While also having one of their talented defenders learn from him. Having to rely on a 19 year old Mamadou Fall has not been the best experience. A he is still learning and makes some hasty decisions due to his lack of experience. Chiellini will hopefully be able to help out the club and provide the leadership they need when times get tough.

With the organization filled with talent, one may argue that the goaltending position is one that could use some retooling. Grant it, there are some good, young goaltenders in the system. The problem is most of them have struggled and have not shown they are improving enough to play at the next level.
