DNA test leads to arrest of Maui man in 40-year-old California murder case

A DNA test has lead to the arrest of a man from Hawaii as a suspect in the killing of 15-year-old Karen Stitt in California in 1982.Gary Ramirez, 75, was arrested by Sunnyvale police in Maui on 2 August.Stitt disappeared after waiting for a bus in Sunnyvale on 3 September 1982. Her naked body was discovered by a delivery truck driver 100 yards from the bus stop. She had been stabbed multiple times and sexually assaulted.Police say Ramirez's DNA matched blood on Stitt's jacket and a wall where she was left.Sign up to our newsletters. Multiple vegetation fires burn along Interstate 280 in San Jose; firefighter hurt

SAN JOSE -- Multiple small vegetation fires were burned along Interstate Highway 280 in San Jose Wednesday afternoon and firefighters were able to knock them down, authorities said.The San José Fire Department said the fires were originally reported at 3:52 p.m. and were burning in the area between Bird Avenue and Race Street just west of state Highway 87. One firefighter was hurt after getting assaulted by a homeless person while the firefighter was responding to the fires near Race Street. The firefighter was being assessed for injuries and the suspect was arrested.The fire department said no structures were threatened. Traffic along the stretch of I-280 was at a crawl and drivers were urged to avoid the area if possible.

Person of interest sought in April fatal shooting in Hayward

HAYWARD -- Police in Hayward released a sketch Wednesday of a person of interest in a fatal shooting earlier this year.The shooting happened on April 8 in the area of Jackson Street and Soto Road. Officers arrived to find a man who had been shot multiple times and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police identified him as 46-year-old Hayward resident Ervin Vargas.On Wednesday, Hayward police released a sketch of a person of interest who was believed to be at the scene at the time of the shooting. He is described as a Caucasian or Hispanic male, 30-35 years old, thin build, approximately 5'10", with short dark brown hair and brown eyes.Anyone with information about the case was asked to contact Detective Kell at 510-293-7176.

Two pedestrians and driver injured in San Jose collision

SAN JOSE -- Police in San Jose are investigating a traffic collision involving a vehicle that struck and injured two pedestrians Tuesday evening, authorities said.The San Jose police Twitter account said the collision happened in the area of West Reed Street and Almaden Avenue at around 4 p.m.    The two adult female pedestrians were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police said the driver of the vehicle was also transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.  

Big rig driver may face charges in Berkeley freeway overramp crash

BERKELEY --  A South San Francisco truck driver may face misdemeanor hit-and-run charges following a crash last month into a freeway overpass in Berkeley that caused an estimated $2.1 million in damage.California Highway Patrol investigators said 63-year-old Willard Osibin was allegedly driving a flatbed big-rig loaded with a John Deere excavator when he crashed into the Interstate Highway 80 overpass at Gilman Street on July 20.The incident was reported around 10:48 a.m. and caused concrete to fall on the roadway, creating surface traffic issues as Gilman was closed in both directions.Authorities said Osibin fled the scene after the incident. Witnesses led the CHP to the company Osibin was driving for, which was Mike O'Brien Specialized Hauling in San Francisco.CHP Officer David Arias said Osibin has admitted to what happened.Caltrans was forced to close three lanes of Highway 80 for two nights last month to accommodate repairs on the overpass.
