Gail Marie Sears Sanders, 63, a native of Morgan City and resident of Patterson, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022, at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette. Visitation will be Saturday from 11 a.m. until services at 1 p.m. at Siracusaville Recreation Center. Masks and social distancing required. Burial will follow in Morgan City Cemetery. Fred Prejean, Lafayette civil rights leader, has died

Fredrick Prejean, the Lafayette civil rights leader who toppled a century-old monument to Jim Crow, died Thursday morning in his sleep, his wife confirmed to The Current. Prejean attended Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech when he was a teenager and continued his civil rights work throughout his lifetime. He was instrumental in the creation of Move the Mindset, an organization that used public pressure and legal filings to bring about the removal of a Jim Crow-era confederate statute from downtown Lafayette.

Juvenile arrested in fatal Breaux Bridge shooting of 26-year-old man

A juvenile suspect has been arrested in the Jan. 10 shooting death of a Breaux Bridge man. The shooting happened in the 1000 block of Courville Road in Breaux Bridge. St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to neighbors’ reports of gunshots and found Cole Horton, 26, deceased from multiple gunshot wounds in the driveway of a residence, a previous statement said.
