Twisted Sisters evacuated Friday night when smoke haze fills building

Kell and Salem Firemen were called to the Twister Sisters bar on Route 37 at the Kell Road Friday night when a smoke haze filled the building and one of the walls appeared to be hot. There was a concern that a fire may be burning in the wall, but the problem turned out to be an overheated furnace. Once the determination was made, the owners of the building planned to call a furnace repairman to take care of the problem.

Shed destroyed in rural Iuka fire Thanksgiving Day

A 20 by 25 foot shed on the Mary Henderson property at 70-77 Quail Run Road in rural Iuka was destroyed during a Thanksgiving Day Fire. Iuka Fire Chief Kenny Eagan says Henderson looked outside when hearing a noise and saw the building completely engulfed in flames. He reports the shed was already on the ground upon their arrival.

Woman, child injured in vehicle-deer accident

An Effingham woman and child were seriously injured when the vehicle they were in struck a deer in Effingham Thursday. Lisa M. Lauritzen, 42, was driving a white 2019 Ford Expedition west on East Fayette Avenue when a deer ran onto the roadway. Lauritzen swerved left to avoid the deer and left the roadway. The vehicle struck the deer and an embankment before becoming airborne and landing on its side. Both the driver and passenger were ejected from the vehicle. The vehicle continued to roll and came to rest on the passenger side. The accident occurred at 4:10 p.m.

Fire Damages Downtown Auto Shop

MODESTO – Investigators are working to determine what caused a fire that significantly damaged a downtown auto shop late Saturday night. At about 10:30pm fire crews responded to a shop on the 600 block of 10th Street for a report of a fire. Arriving firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions with several buildings threatened by the flames. A second alarm was dispatched to bring more additional resources to the scene. Firefighters worked to control the blaze which engulfed an upstairs living area in the building.

Hoyleton man airlifted from crash scene near Farina Friday

FARINA, IL — A 25-year-old Hoyleton man was airlifted from the scene of a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 57 near the Farina exit Friday morning. According to Illinois State police, around 7:23 a.m. Jacob Wacker was driving his SUV southbound on the interstate when he struck the rear of a semi stopped in the same lane due to another crash. ISP says 46-year-old Michael Wilson of Plant City, Florida, refused medical treatment. Wilson was driving the tractor-trailer that Wacker rain into the rear of causing this accident.

Rural Odin home damaged in wood stove chimney fire

A fire that started in a wood stove flu spread to a portion of the kitchen and porch in a rural Odin home before being extinguished by firefighters. Odin Fire Chief Greg Smith says the fire was at the Phillip Potter home at 1411 Community Beach Road. Smith reports the owner was home at the time the fire was discovered. He says most of the damage to the kitchen and porch was a little smoke damage and mostly water damage.

Rural Alma woman injured in single-car wreck

An 82-year-old rural Alma woman was injured in a single-car crash at the Martin Road and Route 37 intersection Friday morning. Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies say Donna Kerley of Oak Grove Road apparently missed the stop sign on Martin Road, crossed Route 37, and then went into the roadside ditch on the other side of the highway. She reportedly hit her head in the crash and was taken to Salem Township Hospital for treatment of injuries by United Medical Response.
