Mary Alice Massey, Age 79, passed away on August 8, 2022 in Lakeland, FL. She was a lifelong resident of Lakeland being born here on May 19, 1943. She was the baby of 8 kids to Charles and Mary Folsom. Mary was a loving, caring and compassionate lady to everyone she met. She was a lover of Christmas and bought everyone presents. Mary was saved and Baptized on May 8 after many years of prayers. She loved nature and collected all types of flowers and plants and enjoyed working to make her yard beautiful.

Judy Kemp, 79, passed away on Monday, July 25, 2022, at her residence due to natural causes. Judy was born in Albany, NY, on September 6, 1942, to Otto and Ella Bruins. She spent many summers at the Methodist Farm in Averill Park, NY, just like her mother and her grandmother. Judy was a graduate of Albany High School, and much of her professional career was in banking.

Jose Cortes, 24

Jose Cortes, 24, passed away the morning of August 11, 2022 in Tampa, Florida. He was born in Guanajuato, Mexico on March 1, 1998, and was raised in Lakeland, Florida. Jose was known for being the life of the party; he was always happy and making everyone laugh. Family was most important to Jose; he put them first and loved them dearly, especially his young son. Jose is survived by his high school sweetheart, wife Andrea Cortes, and their son Leo Cortes. He is also survived by his mother Maria Arriaga and brother Hilario Cortes.

Kenneth Clark McPherson, 56

Kenneth Clark McPherson, age 56, of Lakeland, FL, passed away Sunday, August 7, 2022. He was born on February 26, 1966 in Columbia, South Carolina to Charles and Martha Earlene (Rush) McPherson. Kenny was an Outside Sales Representative for Chicago Metals Fabrication. His philosophy was “I’m always happy to win a new friend or win a new customer and if it happens to be both, even better.”

Adam Wesley Maerz, 40

Adam Wesley Maerz, 40, went home to be with his Lord Jesus on Saturday, August 6, 2022. Adam was born on October 16, 1981, in New York, New York, to Klaus P. Maerz and Regina Maerz, who preceded him in death. He loved his job working at Topper’s Brick Oven Pizza. Adam is survived by his wife, Jennifer; sons, Lucius and Magnus; brother, Klaus Maerz; sister, Sarah Alvarez; nephews, Mario Jr. and Salvador; and a large extended family.

Wilda Andress Collins, 93

Wilda Andress Collins, 93, died peacefully Saturday, August 6th, 2022, at Good Shepherd Hospice House. She was surrounded by her family at her Homecoming. Wilda graduated Kathleen High School in 1946 where she was a member of the National Beta Club and was awarded the American Legion Certificate Award. In 1949, Wilda married her high school sweetheart Rennis Collins. Together they became active members at Central Avenue Baptist Church where they were volunteer youth ministers. Wilda was also employed here as church secretary for many years.

Anthony Howard Montgomery, 77

Anthony Howard Montgomery passed away August 5, 2022 at Good Shepherd Hospice. He was born August 21, 1945. Tony was predeceased by his wife, Debbie, and his son, Jory. Tony lived in Florida since 1979 when he and his family moved from Canada. Even up to his final days, he still had his sense of humor and jokingly self. He will be greatly missed. Tony is survived by his son, Travis of Lakeland; sisters, Bev and Hazel, of Canada, and 2 granddaughters, Sloan and Scarlet.

Colonel David Lee Sims, 74

Colonel David Lee Sims, US Army (Ret) of Lakeland, FL, passed away on August 5, 2022 at the age of 74, surrounded by his family. David was born on January 30, 1948 in Norfolk, VA to Jackson David Sims and Margie Mae Eubank Sims. Born into a military family, David had a deep sense of patriotism and public service and followed his father and uncles into a career in the armed services, joining the Army in 1967. He served in posts throughout the world, but always called Alabama home – he didn’t follow a lot of sports, but always made time for Crimson Tide football. He retired as a colonel after 28 years of service and was a proud veteran.

Norman Francis Curran, Jr., 63

Norman Francis Curran, Jr., passed away on August 9, 2022, and was born on July 13, 1959, in Providence, RI and his family moved to Lakeland when he was a year old. He attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Santa Fe High School, and Polk Community College. As a teenager he was in Tree of Life at Resurrection Catholic Church. Norman was employed by Tierra, Inc. as an Environmental Testing Engineer.

Ronald “Andy” Anderson, 88

Ronald “Andy” was born on a farm in Carson, Iowa, and spent his early years farming community of Treynor, Iowa. He was involved in every sport offered in high school and graduated with a class of 21. The day after high school he headed for basic training in the Navy. He married his high school sweetheart, Bev, in 1958 and they moved to San Diego, CA. He did a tour in Japan during the Korean war. They also lived in San Francisco where their daughter, Ronee, was born. After serving four years they moved back to Treynor, Iowa and had a son, Randy, and another son, Russell. Andy owned and operated a tire service center for years. He serviced a lot of the tractor and truck tires in the area corn fields too. Andy loved watching his kids play high school sports and this continued on with his grandchildren. Andy and Bev sold their business so they could do some traveling after the kids were out of high school. Their travels ranged from driving to Alaska and working for a summer at a salmon fishing lodge, to getting a job with KOA as campground inspectors, traveling all the way from Bar Harbor Maine to the gulf coast of Florida. They also lived in South Texas and Rogers, AR for a number of years.

Cornelia McCreary Waters, 93

Cornelia McCreary Waters (Nitzy) died on Tuesday, August 9, 2022. She was born January 1, 1929, in Hamlet, NC, to Dr. and Mrs. A. B. McCreary. Her family moved to Jacksonville, FL, where she later attended, and graduated from, Landon High School. She went on to attend Florida State College for Women which, in 1947, was changed to Florida State University. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi honorary society and Alpha Gamma Delta social sorority. She graduated from FSU with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. Upon marrying Bob Waters she moved to Lakeland in 1950. She taught 9th grade English and 12th grade Speech at Lakeland Junior/Senior High School before starting a family. She and her family attended First Presbyterian Church where she attended Circle meetings, served on the board of Women of the Church, co-chaired Women’s Bible Study, and taught 10th grade Sunday School.

Shirley Spargos, 95

Shirley Spargos, age 95, died in her home in Lakeland Wednesday, August 10th. Born in Chicago, she spent most of her life in Florida and worked for the Chrysler Company. Her greatest love was gardening. Shirley served many years as the Treasurer and/or Secretary of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs District 9, the Garden Cub of Lakeland, and the Sturdy Oaks and Beacon Hill Circles.
