Steptoe Canyon Fire Estimated at 2,000 Acres as of Friday Afternoon

COLTON - According to an update from the SE Washington Interagency Incident Management Team, as of 12:15pm Friday, the Steptoe Canyon Fire burning west/southwest of the Colton-Uniontown area near the Snake River is now estimated at 2,000 acres with 0% containment. As of this writing, no structures have been damaged, and four structures remain threatened.

Victims, suspect identified in fatal Kamiah shooting

KAMIAH, Idaho — The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office has identified the three people killed in a shooting in Kamiah. Authorities said 31-year-old Maden McAnear and 57-year-old Chip Brooks were killed. The suspect is 71-year-old Ronald Port, who they believe shot and killed them, then shot himself. The sheriff’s office is investigating the shooting as a murder-suicide.

Arnold Nielsen, Pearl Harbor Casualty Identified Through DNA to be Honored at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens With Full Military Honors This Saturday

LEWISTON - On Saturday, July 24, a WWII Casualty from the USS Oklahoma Battleship from Pearl Harbor will be honored with full military honors at Lewis Clark Memorial Gardens in Lewiston. Arnold Nielsen was one of the 429 sailors of the USS Oklahoma who lost their lives on the morning of December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Through DNA, 32-year-old Arnold Nielson, Boatswain's Mate First Class, was recently identified.

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions Remain in Effect For Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest Lands in Grangeville Fire Restrictions Area

GRANGEVILLE - At 12:01am on Friday, July 16, Stage II fire restrictions were implemented on Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest Lands within the Grangeville Fire Restrictions Area. One week later, those restrictions remain in place. With no forecasted relief in sight for our current fire conditions, fire managers are urging the public to be aware of the potential for new and emerging incidents that any thunderstorms accompanied by lightning could produce. Extra precaution is needed when recreating outside of traditional communications. Emergency resource agencies are focusing their efforts on keeping the public safe. However, due to the growing number and intensity of the wildfires, there are few resources available to alert individuals of an impending incident in the backcountry or away from populated areas.

Deputies identify victims, suspect in Kamiah murder-suicide

KAMIAH, Idaho (CBS2) — Police in northern Idaho have identified the three people dead in a murder-suicide. The Lewis County Sheriff's Office says the shooting occurred at a motel on the 1000 block of 3rd Street in Kamiah Monday evening. Steptoe Canyon Fire Burning Over A Thousand Acres In Southern Whitman County-6 Planes Will Be Dropping Water On The Flames Today

A canyon fire in Southern Whitman County near the Snake River has burned about 1,200 acres. Whitman County Fire District 14 Volunteer Firefighters from Colton/Uniontown were called to the blaze in Steptoe Canyon near Nisqually John Landing around 2:30 this morning. The fire was already several hundred acres by the time volunteers arrived on scene. Volunteer Firefighters from District 12 out of Pullman, Asotin County Fire District 1 and the Moscow Rural Fire Department were called in to assist. The City of Pullman Fire Department and Clarkston City Firefighters responded as well.
