Red Oak Police investigate two vehicle accident

(Red Oak) Both drivers escaped injuries when a northbound vehicle struck a southbound vehicle on Sunday in Red Oak. According to the Red Oak Police Department, the accident took place at N Boundary Street and E Hammond Street at 3:57 p.m. 77-year-old Jane Waltz, of Red Oak was Northbound on N Boundary Street in a 2016 Chevy Equinox while 53-year-old Brenda Vrba, of Red Oak, was Southbound on N Boundary Street in a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Phyllis J. Simonton, 95 of Atlantic

Celebration of Life for Phyllis J. Simonton, 95, of Atlantic, will be Thursday, August 11th from 2 pm to 4 pm at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Audubon Swimming Pool gearing up for upgrades during offseason

(Audubon) A few updates to the Audubon swimming pool that have been considered in recent years are getting closer to being on the front burner. Ashley Hartl with Audubon Park and Rec Board says the pool is 30 years old. It has mostly all original equipment. “That pool was built in 1992. We can still operate with what we have, however as the years go on with wear and tear on it it would be beneficial if we were able to do the upgrades.”

Red Oak board renews special education consortiums, staff training

(Red Oak) -- Red Oak school officials continued their participation in special education consortiums in the region. During its regular meeting Monday night, the Red Oak School Board approved renewing the district's participation in the Southwest Iowa Apex Consortium through the Glenwood School District and the Children's Square Learning Center, and Heartland Family Service Therapeutic School through the Council Bluffs School District for the 2022-23 school year. Ron Lorenz is the Red Oak School Superintendent. Lorenz says several regional districts have participated in the programs for several years. He adds the Apex consortium is primarily focused on pooling resources for specialized needs.

Reward offered for Bodies of Two Dogs Found Near Cumberland

(Cumberland ) Authorities in southwest Iowa investigate the deaths of two dogs that were killed and thrown off a bridge. The bodies of a nearly two-year-old pit bull named “Bella” and a three-year-old black lab named “Pepper” were found about two miles from where their owner lives in rural Cumberland. Owner Logan Lank says his dogs often wandered to neighboring properties in the rural area near Cumberland, where they played with kids and other dogs. A Go-Fund-Me account offering a reward of nearly six thousand dollars was created by the family for information leading to an arrest. If the reward goes unclaimed, the money will be used for a cause that supports animals.

Griswold alum Lane Mueller getting up to speed at Central

(Pella) After playing quarterback in a run heavy offense at Griswold, Lane Mueller is getting used to playing wide receiver for Central. Mueller had to overcome some injuries and some illness during his initial campaign with the Dutch, but he’s settling in to his new position. “It was just a new experience I wanted to try. I’ve always thought at receiver I could catch balls really well, at least when I was young. In college I had to get a hold of getting those zipping passes at me.”

Lange steps in to fill Audubon volleyball coaching void

(Audubon) A familiar face is back in charge of the Audubon volleyball program, at least temporarily. The Wheelers have a lot of key returners for the 2022 season. Lange, who guided the Wheelers to the 2016 state tournament, is filling in this season during head coach Brandi Gruhn’s maternity leave. “They asked me if I’d do it and after some arm pulling from my husband he finally said yes and here I am.”

Funeral Services for 87 year old Darlene Schuster of Shelby will be Thursday, August 11th at 10:30 AM at the United Church of Avoca. Family will greet friends Wednesday, August 10th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca. Burial will be at the Shelby Cemetery. The Pauley Jones Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Eleanor Sandholm

Eleanor Louise Miller Sandholm was born March 23, 1930, in Fontanelle, Iowa to Fred and Marjorie Dilley Miller and entered into the arms of her Savior on Aug. 4, 2022, in Des Moines at the age of 92 years, four months and 12 days. Eleanor was baptized, confirmed and married at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle. She graduated from Fontanelle High School in 1947 and attended Simpson College where she received her two-year teaching degree, after which she taught in elementary school for a year in Osceola.
