Lee County Softball hosts annual youth summer camp

LEESBURG, Ga. (WALB) - It was a busy Wednesday morning in Leesburg as dozens of kids took to the diamond for the annual Lee County softball camp. In a record-breaking turn out the Trojans hosted nearly 70 kids ages 6-14 during the three-day camp. After a year without camps due to the pandemic, Trojans softball coach Dwayne Suggs was thrilled so many young girls signed up for the camp.

Albany Scout John Holton wins National Heroism Award

ALBANY — The South Georgia Council and the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America recently presented the National Heroism Award to Scout John Burns Holton of Albany. On June 14th, 2020, while canoeing on the Kinchafoonee Creek in Lee County, Holton and other Scouts were swimming and diving into the water. After one such dive, a fellow Scout surfaced in distress and quickly sank. Holton swam to the spot but could not locate the sunken Scout either above or below the water.

Eight Albany area baseball players earn Georgia Dugout Preview All-State honors

Eight Albany area high school baseball players made the Georgia Dugout Preview All-State Teams, released this week. In Class AAAAAA, Lee County senior Smith Pinson earned honorable mention acclaim. The right-handed pitcher/third baseman went 7-1 this season with a 1.38 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 55 2/3 innings, in addition to hitting .324 with six doubles and 24 runs scored. He will play college baseball at Kennesaw State.

What we’re overlooking by just throwing out criticism of Lee Commissioners Mathis, Wheaton and Wall is that they have put the county treasury in jeopardy by not responding to the letter from Sistrunk’s lawyer. You’d think Mathis, as a lawyer, would know that; Wheaton, too, but we know what kind of judge he was.
