Storm produces damaging winds, hail

A storm that passed through Leavenworth County Friday afternoon produced damaging winds and more than one inch of rain, the local emergency management director said. Winds from the storm reached 70 mph. Leavenworth County Emergency Management Director Chuck Magaha said there were reports of several large downed trees in Lansing.

RCC gym reopens for some activities

The gymnasium at the Riverfront Community Center has reopened to the public for a couple of activities, according to a city spokeswoman. The gym was used earlier in the year for COVID-19 vaccination clinics conducted by the Leavenworth County Health Department. The Health Department moved the clinics to another location in May, but equipment was left set up in the gym in case the location was needed again for vaccination clinics.

Cleanup of fuel spill completed

The cleanup of an estimated 1,500 gallons of diesel fuel that was spilled in southern Leavenworth County has been completed, the local emergency management director said. But the company hired to perform the cleanup will return next week to fill in dirt in a ditch and reseed the area for grass, according to Chuck Magaha, director of Leavenworth County Emergency Management.

Vaccination clinic disassembled at community center

Leavenworth County Health Department officials do not plan to return to the Riverfront Community Center for COVID-19 vaccination clinics. Earlier in the year, Health Department officials used the gymnasium at the community center to administer COVID-19 vaccines to members of the public. In May, the weekly vaccination clinic was moved back to the offices of the Health Department, which are located at 500 Eisenhower Road.
