The Lassen Sportsmens Club released the results of the 33rd annual Junior Fishing Derby held Saturday, May 21. According to a statement from the club, 327 participants registered for the event — 110 participants for ages 2 to 5 and 217 participants for ages 6 to 15. It was a cloudy day just perfect for fishing with temperatures from 34 to 69 degrees.

Honey Lake Hospice announced this week that Kaely Cuthill is the 2022 recipient of the Marge Dunlavy Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded annually to the most deserving applicant who is pursuing a degree in a health-related field with a special interest in gerontology, oncology or hospice and palliative care.

The Lassen Fire Safe Council, Inc. has received a nearly $5 million grant from the CalFire Forest Health Program for the Dixie West Reforestation Project. The grant will help restore forest resiliency to 4,236 acres of former timberland northwest of the communities of Westwood, Pinetown and Clear Creek that were devastated by the 2021 Dixie Fire. The project will increase the pace and scale of restoration to properties in Lassen and Plumas counties.

Lassen County’s Board of Supervisors hold an evening public hearing on commercial cannabis activities in the county’s jurisdiction at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, at Jensen Hall at the Lassen County Fairgrounds in order to allow members of the public who work during the day to offer comment to the board.

The Lassen High School Performing Arts Club will be presenting The Lightning Thief, A Musical, tonight, Wednesday and Saturday in Lassen High Room 715. The musical, adapted from the New York Times best-seller, The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, is a Percy Jackson adventure and starts Beth Nielsen as Annabeth Chase, Manny Laporte as Percy Jackson and Luke Beach as Grover Underwood.

Cara is a five-year-old Dogue de Bordeaux, also known as a French Mastiff. She was busy visiting vet offices last week and now she’s ready to meet prospective adopters. This little lady is a petite size for her breed, coming in at just under 70 pounds. She can be shy at first but once she comes out of her shell she’s all play and snuggles. Cara loves stuffed animals and receiving lots of love and attention.
