A Barnesville man is off a ventilator after he ingested a quantity of Meth during a raid in Lamar County March 31st.

Henry Abreu, a Lamar County resident who ingested a quantity of meth during a drug raid at his Stafford Avenue home in Barnesville March 31, is now of a ventilator, was arrested Friday after checking himself out of a Thomaston nursing home’s hospice facility, according to Lt. Chad Payne of the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office. He is now in the Lamar County Jail.

Snow sets U.S. record for triples

Mary Persons junior baseball player Eric Snow secured himself a place in the record books last Wednesday by setting a new U.S. record for triples in a season with 18. Snow drove a fast ball to left center field in the sixth inning of MP’s 12-6 win over Lamar County for his record-breaking 18th triple of the year. The game was paused while MP coach Clay Mathis retrieved the ball for Snow’s big three bagger. Snow had tied the record in Game 1 of the double header, which ended in a 10-0 win for the Bulldogs.

MCMS boys win area

The Monroe County Middle School boys soccer team captured the area championship on Saturday with a 5-0 win over Lamar County at Lancaster Field in Forsyth. Coach Tracy Buff’s boys, who finished the year with an 11-2-2 record, not only won the title but avenged a 4-0 loss to Lamar County just two days earlier in Barnesville. Buff said Lamar County parents and players had taunted and jeered the Monroe County boys as the Trojans cruised to the shutout victory on their artificial turf field on Thursday.

Suspect arrested in Florida for murder of 17-year-old girl found dead in Georgia cemetery

Authorities in Florida have arrested a 22-year-old man suspected killing a Georgia teenager whose body was found in a Lamar County cemetery on Sunday. Lamar County Sheriff’s investigators identified the 17-year-old girl as D’Shaunti Kyanni Hunter and said she had suffered from at least one gunshot wound. On Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said that Jaylan Jashad Ray, 23, had been arrested in Tallahassee and was awaiting extradition back to Georgia.

A Forsyth man had to be Lifeflighted to Atrium Health Navicent after a violent collision on Hwy. 36 in Lamar County on March 11. Anthony Furlow, 28, was southbound on Hwy. 36 when he struck a tractor-trailer driven by James Goodman, 37, of Stockbridge. The Honda spun around and hit a Volkswagen Passat driven by Mackayla Wright, 20, of Yatesville. The Passat ended up in the creek. The accident happened around 8:19 a.m. on Thursday.

Proform Construction begins $1 million renovation to Health Department

Work has begun renovating Monroe County Health Department. The job was awarded to Robert Muckenfuss of Proform Construction LLC, Forsyth with the low bid of $745,000. The company was the general contractor for the construction of the new Lamar County Health Department a couple of years ago and has completed several major jobs locally, according to Morris Hutcheson of Georgia Department of Public Health North Central Health District, the project manager for the renovations.

Gordon State College begins vaccinations

BARNESVILLE — Gordon State College recently announced that it has begun the process of vaccinating certain individuals on its campus to protect against the COVID-19 virus. The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine will be offered to those individuals who meet the current criteria to receive the vaccine — including faculty and staff who are 55 and older, anyone with developmental disabilities, or faculty and staff who are age 16 years or older with underlying conditions. About 70 faculty and staff who met the criteria were vaccinated on the first day eligible.
